Being born a free man in the times of the 1830s and 1840s was a very rare thing. That was something that happened for Solomon Northup. While Solomon Northup was working hard to support his family Solomon Northup was kidnapped and sold into slavery at the hands of rouge kidinnapers. Once Solomon Northup was in their custody Solomon Northup endured many cruel and ridiculous experiences while trying to find his way to freedom. This was a huge problem as well for his family who did not know what had happened to their father. With the help of a Canadian abolitionist Solomon Northup was able to find his way back to his family and was able to once again walk the streets as a free man. Solomon Northup worked with a local writer to turn his account into a book which made the bestseller list and then toured the country lecturing as well as trying to raise awareness for the cause. It is not clear what happened to Solomon in his later life as his death is still a mystery. However, Solomon Northup laid the building blocks for what became national awareness of the situation in the south as well as internationally regarding slavery.
In October of 2013 Solomon Northup’s memoir was made into a movie, Twelve Years a Slave then became a national bestseller overnight and won 9 academy awards. For this reason there was amazing interest again in allowing for him to move forward with the process of becoming an inspiration, although Solomon Northup was dead for over 150 years. Solomon Northup’s story is one of inspiration and amazement.
