For people who create and modify text files, SED and AWK are power tools for editing. Most of the things that you can do with these programs can be done interactively with a text editor. However, using SED and AWK can save many hours of repetitive work in achieving the same result.

In diesem Sinn...

I am here to tell you that on more than one occasion this book has saved my bacon. Several times in different environments I needed to use sed to correct data in flat files. Once I used sed to change the format and numbers when we wanted to match accounting numbers to a different system. I haven't used that much awk. However there has been occasion to transfer awk programs from one UNIX to a different UNIX flavor. I found that the regular awk in this book was newer than the newawk in the other system. I Still keep the book handy incase I get squeezed for time and have to manipulate files. However I am learning more and more to appreciate PERL on those occasions.

5.0 von 5 Sternen my favourite language covered well 11. Mai 2014
Von Kim L - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
The UNIX command line pipeline remains one of the seminal concepts of computer science. It remains one of the greatest achievements in my opinion and AWK may be one of the greatest embodiments of the concepts while adding just enough capability to be a language on its own as well. In these days of rdf and jason, plain and encoded text remains a viable alternative for simple tasks. Very well worth the read, especially if you were not trained in the 60s or 70s ...

5.0 von 5 Sternen Can Replace All of Your SED & AWK Bookmarks (2ndEd) 13. August 2008
Von Clint Pachl - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
This book is like a big tutorial series, packed with tons of applicable examples. It is not a reference, that's what the man pages are for, although the index if very good. In fact, the combination of the *BSD man pages and this book would give any man all the SED and AWK documentation he would ever need.

SED and AWK are these two very terse programs that, if you don't use them everyday, you tend to forget their syntax and functionality. I am not an everyday user. Before I bought this book, I often visited one of my many SED/AWK bookmarks. After years of using both programs, I never really understood them. I knew just enough to do small one-liners. However, I recently needed to build a fairly complex script to perform an automated OS upgrade via the network. I knew SED and AWK could help me accomplish my task, but I didn't have a full understanding of their potential. That's when I decided to buy this book. I have since then deleted all of my SED and AWK bookmarks.

After studying this book and highlighting the hell out of it, I have a clear understanding of these two tools and how to effectively utilize them.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Somewhat useful 25. Februar 2013
Von William M - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I bought a used copy, which turned out to have been printed in 1992. Operating system references are to UNIX, as Linux was a virtually-unknown infant at the time; references to various software utilities is similarly dated. The 2nd edition might be somewhat better; it's listed as a 1997 edition, so it may actually be aware of Linux. Even so, I would be skeptical of spending the dough on a pig in a poke.

Dated material aside, I found the book difficult to use, even though I've been learning programming languages since 1982 -- including that early, primitive BASIC, 8086 assembly, Pascal, C, C++, Perl, HTML, Java, VB, and others. The flow of its materials presentation doesn't seem to build naturally from ground zero. Perhaps if I'd learned programming on a UNIX machine, the references in this book would be clearer.

So, heads up if you're looking to learn sed and awk. This book can probably be of some help (especially if you're a UNIX geek), but you may well need to augment it with a lot of on-line or other research.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Another brilliant book from the O'Reilly crew. 30. März 2001

This is a typically great book from O'Reilly Press. I find this book to be invaluable when I need to look up how to do something with sed or awk.
It takes you through the basics of sed and awk, shows you regular expression syntax and delves deeper into both programs. For sed it shows you all of the basic sed commands as well as many of the more advanced commands such as multiline pattern spaces. With awk it goes even deeper as awk is a more powerful program. It shows the basics for writing awk scripts then takes you into flow control, functions and debugging.
I find the writing to be concise and clear with many examples to show you how it works in the real world.
All in all it's a great book for the unix admin or programmer to have on their bookshelf.

4.0 von 5 Sternen basic tools to do a basic job 14. Dezember 2008
Von Herbert C. Meyer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Computers do one basic job, they process data. Often, you do not have control over the output format of the data, but the stuff you want in in there somewhere. So you capture the output to a file, and then chop and hack at it with a text editor to get the data you want in format somewhat like you want.
You can either spend the rest of eternity with a text editor or get these guys, and learn a bit to instruct them to do totally boring but useful drudgery. And perhaps learn about regular expressions and pattern matching. And then do something interesting.
Don't worry, you will have do do it again, if for no other reason than the entity that controls the format of the data decided to change it, for no other reason than to annoy and confound you. But, since you have learned about pattern matching, a minor change will fix it, and you can go back to whatever.
The specific purpose this time was to avoid subscribing to a listing service for cable tv programming. Zap2it publishes the listings on most newspaper websites, and program called wget allows me to write these listings to a file. Then using sed to slice and dice allows me to read simply formatted listings, and eventually feed them to a recording system.
