ATTENTION - THIS BOOK IS IDENTICAL TO "SCARECROW AND THE ARMY OF THIEVES"
After the last title Scarecrow has been taken out of circulation. His traumatic experiences surrounfing the execution of Fox in the last novel have made him unfit for normal duty and so he gets a teaching-position until work with a civilian psychologist brings him around. After that - and because following the destruction of a French submarine in "Ice-Station" military assassins of the Grande Nation are after him - Scarecrow gets sent to the arctic to test new military equipment in the extreme cold. With him are some civilians and some Marine - among them Mother.
The quiet work with new weapons, ration-packs and a robot gets cut short when a nearby Russian weapon-development facility is overrun by the anarchist Army of Thieves that releases an atmorspheric weapon that threatens to destroy large parts of the Northern hemisphere. There are only a few hours till depleyment and Schofield and his little group and a troop of SEALs are the only ones near enough to go to Dragon Island and stop the weapon of very massive destruction.
Outrageous odds are nothing new in Scarecrow-novels and Matthew Reilly seems to live for them, but in this case he goes a few steps to far for my taste in lucky coincidences and feats of endurance. Realism has never been very important in his books - which has been part of the fun reading them - but this goes a bit to far. But I liked the development of the character of Scarecrow and some of the new characters quite a bit.
