Kevin Powers' is the latest in a long line of disillusioned war narratives created by US soldiers serving in Iraq or Afghanistan - or, one generation earlier, in Vietnam. What they have in common is the shocking recognition that they are not seen as the great liberators but, more often than not, as foreign occupators; mostly ignorant of the local language and social/cultural codes, they are blundering along, and after a while the only sense they can make of the war becomes individual survival. Powers finds striking images for the soldiers' daily frustration and fear, as well as for his protagonist's attempts to overcome the "guilt of the survivor" in the face of his buddy's gruesome death.
