This is by far Stephen King's best work and one of the best novels I've ever read. It is not about a haunted hotel, a psychic child, or even madness and alcoholism, though it contains all of those elements. It is, simply put, about a father's love for his son. The motion picture, while scary in its own right, did not do justice to the story; conversely King's adaptation for ABC was truer and scarier. He even tweaked the ending a little, resulting in a powerful tug at any father's heartstrings. If you only read one King book, this is the one.
