I have to reply to your comment, because it seems that you have not understand the real story behind everything.
This books is a cyclic book (in some way). Felipe discovers this job that is -destined- for him (Coincidence?). That is how he enters to the magical world of the Señora Consuelo, where cats get burned, different plants are used, religious symbols are used for other purposes, and many mysterious things happend, everything in a little old and dark house located in the middle of the chaotic center of Mexico D.F.
He then fells in love with Aura, the "niece" of Consuelo, that later he also founds out looks really similar to the young Consuelo. (Is Aura real? Why is she always doing the same stuff that Consuelo does?) She is the one that inspires Felipe to continue with his work. After the first time they have sex, he sees her. He sees Consuelo laughing and watching. They - Consuelo and Aura - leave then at same time. Felipe is scared, he wants to escape. But no, he can not leave Aura alone. He then decides to continue with the work. The yellow ribbon. Yellow, as of knowledge. Felipe, while reading this, discovers too many similarities between himself and the Coronel. Coincidence? Not at all. Nothing was a coincidence. He was destined to be here. He was destined to take the job. You were destined to take the job. You were destined to be with Aura. But Aura ist not Aura. Aura is Consuelo. And you are not Felipe. You are the coronel. Returning to your loved one. Returning to your home. Completing the circle that was broken with your dead. Completing the duality of Aura/Consuelo and Felipe/the Coronel.
