First time author Lily King has a masterpiece on her hands. It's scary to think this is her first work. We are certainly in for a treat if she goes with her future work. "The Pleasing Hour" is a brilliant and wonderful book that had me captured. The story of au pair Rosie is full of rapture and poetry. Her character moves to Paris after the birth of her baby (who she gives up) and becomes an au pair in a house of 3 children and their parents. She begins by trying to establish bonds with all of them but, over time circumstances change and a torrid affair between Rosie and the father begins shifting the balance of the whole book. It's a wonderful story of characters, plot, language, setting and beauty. I was overwhelmed and knocked off my feet. It's a wonderful book, and don't plan on doing anything else until you finish it.
