Jared, a red jewelled warlord, has been a pleasure slave for nine long years and now he has come to his breaking point. He kills his owner in a mindless rage and is sent to the slave auctions to end up in the salt mines of Pruul. Instead he is purchased by the infamous and dreaded Gray Lady - a fate more feared than death. This queen is Dorothea's mightiest adversary and no slave in her possession has ever been seen again. Together with other slaves Jared goes on that last, perilous journey, where he will learn what it means to serve a true queen and bear her invisible ring.
THE INVISIBLE RING is a prequel of the Black Jewels Trilogy and tells the story of the queen, who gave Jaenelle the idea of how to cleanse the Blood of its taint. The book is good, but not as great as the BJT - it's less intense, less funny, less inventive. Maybe it's because so many great characters are missing (even though Sadi makes an entrance), maybe because the expectations were too high. Still it's great for those who want to immerse themselves in the Black Jewels universe again.
FINSTERNIS, the German translation, is going to be published by Heyne in April 07.
