This is the best overview of human history from the beginning to the present that I have had the pleasure of reading for decades. While Dr. Harari's theories and conclusions are, as he admits in his lectures, controversial, they are well supported with empirical evidence that the nonspecialist can immediately comprehend. The German edition is a translation from English; the translator has done an excellent job of rendering colloquial English expressions (some slang) into German equivalents. I have recommended this book to several friends already.
I purchased the book to supplement Dr. Harari's lectures I am enjoying on a Coursera MOOC called A Brief History of Humankind. I have not been disappointed in any respect. I am impressed by this effort to condense these millennia of human history into a little over 500 pages. And the book and the lectures have prompted me to explore related areas for more detail.
