This wired gaming mouse from Uping is, upon arrival, actually the Thunderbird T2 Gaming Mouse from Easterntimes Tech. Before plugging it in, I gave it a looking over to assess the "look and feel" and overall build quality. It is a solidly built mouse with a good weight to it. It's not too light or too heavy in my opinion. It has just enough heft to feel like your moving something without thinking it will fly across your desk. I'm not sure if I would call this mouse ergonomic, but it does fit nicely in the hand. My hand is slightly larger than most, but it doesn't feel like it's too small. The surface of the mouse is textured (the manufacturer calls it "Lava imitated skin texture anti-slide surface") and makes for a nice anti-slip grip. There is a slight contour to the left and right buttons that allows the fingers to fall correctly and comfortably in place. The back end rises up, and is rounded enough, to fit nicely in the palm of the hand. The buttons on the left side are placed so that the thumb falls naturally over them. These two buttons have ridges that make them easy to locate. the two small buttons on top are for the DPI adjustment. The mouse wheel is rubberized and has ridges. This makes it easy to scroll with the finger as you don't have to worry about your finger sliding around or off the wheel. Also, the wheel has a nice tactile feel to it when scrolling. You can feel the steps when the wheel scrolls up and down but is not audible. It also has enough resistance to maintain control, but not so much that it doesn't give you a "smooth" scrolling experience. The LED lighting is aesthetically pleasing as well. It's not too bright as to blind you, but prominent enough to be noticeable. The colors, brighness and effects of the LEDs are completely adjustable with the included software. On the bottom are two large Teflon feet that allows the mouse to glide smoothly across the surface. I have tried it with different surfaces (cloth and hard polymer mousing surfaces, as well as the wooden desktop) and it seems to glide equally well on any surface. Also on the bottom is small red button labeled "Mode Switch". I couldn't find anywhere a description of this button, but it seems to switch between the 5 profiles associated with the mouse. the USB cable is 180 cm, which should be long enough to reach most anywhere. The cable is made with a woven fabric, which makes it a little stiff and unwieldy, but it should make it pretty durable and keep it from fraying. At the end is a gold plated USB plug which, in theory anyways, will help keep the plug from oxidizing and in turn last longer.
The mechanics found inside are standard fare for a gaming mouse. The Avago optical sensor and Omron switches for the buttons can be found in even the higher end, more notable brands. That's not to say that these components are by any means average or "run of the mill". On the contrary, it's nice to find these quality parts in what could arguably be considered a "budget" gaming mouse.
Upon plugging in the mouse for the fist time, it was nice to see it work right out of the box without any special drivers installed. My Windows 10 64 bit machine detected and installed the mouse without any problems. The essential components that need to function, such as switching the DPI, can be done with the buttons on the mouse. It is nice to see though that software/drivers are included from the manufacturer to make certain adjustments and fine tune the mouse. The software/drivers also installed without incident on Windows 10 64 bit. The software allows you to adjust almost every aspect of the mouse. You can have 5 different profiles for fine tuning the settings for games, software or the Windows desktop. This keeps you from having to constantly change your mouse settings every time you open a particular game or program. All you have to do is pick the appropriate profile that you saved the settings under for that special game. The software allows you create macros that you can then apply to the buttons of the mouse. It also allows you to change the polling rate of the optical sensor, the DPI settings and how many of these DPI settings you want active and also the mouse acceleration, pointer speed, scroll speed and double click speed. The lighting can also be adjusted to your hearts content with the software. You can change the light color, brightness, and "breathing" speed (how fast the lights fade on and off). There's also an Info button that you can click to see the product info, hardware/software version info and help info. There are also buttons that can restore individual profiles back to factory default, or you can reset everything back to factory default with the click of another button. You can also save and restore custom profiles if you ever need to uninstall/reinstall the software.
This mouse is not without it's faults though. The mouse itself is fine. I couldn't find any real problems with the hardware. What it really comes down to in this case is what a person finds aesthetically & ergonomically pleasing. You may not like the lights or the lightning bolts running across the top, but the form and function performs worry free. The buttons have a satisfying "click" when use them and the mouse moves across the surface just fine. The real problem that I see is in the software and manufacturer support. My regular mouse also has software that does all the things the software for this mouse does. The big difference is how the profiles are applied. When you go through all the trouble to set up the perfect profile for that favorite game, it would be nice if it would automatically switch to that profile when you start said game. As stated before, the mouse that I use day to day has software that allows me to fine tune every aspect of it, and I can associate that profile with a game so that it automatically switches profiles when I start the game. In the case of the software for the Thunderbird T2, you first have to open the mouse software in order to switch to the appropriate profile and then start the game/program. It's either that, or, you give each profile a different lighting scheme and then use the button on the bottom of the mouse to switch profiles with. Of course you need to remember what color goes with which profile depending on the game or program you want to start. I find all of this very cumbersome and it really takes away from the great experience that this mouse would otherwise give.
Then there's the problem with manufacturer support. When you find it on Amazon, it's listed under Uping with their own description of the mouse. If you turn around and do an internet search, you will not necessarily find the mouse outside from any Amazon listings. This makes it hard to do any research on the product prior to purchasing it. It's not until you receive the mouse that its obvious it comes from a different manufacturer/supplier. This would be Easterntimes Tech. In the software you will find a link under the "Info" tab which has a clickable link not only for a PDF version of the manual, but also one for the manufacturer's website. This is all well and good, but unfortunately the PDF manual is only in Chinese. Also, when you click to open the website, it takes forever to load and it's all Chinese. There is a button at the top right of the page that allows you to switch from Chinese to English, but I found that in doing that, there were several necessary pages that simply weren't found when switching to English. I had better luck with opening the website in Google Chrome and then letting Google translate it for me. The biggest problem though was that the mouse in question was simply not found anywhere on their website. That means there are no software/firmware updates for this mouse and the worst thing would be if something happened to the included disk, then there's no chance of downloading the software from their website.
In conclusion, if you are on a tight budget or if you think you need a back-up in case something happens to your usual mouse, then I have absolutely no problems recommending this peripheral. In the role of being that secondary/emergency mouse at a LAN party, or for the non-gaming everyday user, it fills that need just fine. It's just a shame that it doesn't have the software and manufacturer support that makes for a truly great gaming mouse.
