Buy if you enjoy fighting to get things working
17. Juni 2018
This is as much a review of Raspbian/Debian linux OS as anything else. If you are experienced with such operating systems you probably won't be disappointed.
I bought this expecting that for the most common use cases that years of user community work would have developed nice, easy paths for non technical users to get things sorted. I am a fairly technical user, being that I work as a backend web dev, albeit one who has managed to escape learning much about linux system admin.
It took hours of trying things to get even an hdmi output. Since then all I've wanted to do is run a nextcloud server with files stored on an external drive. This has been a saga despite all the various packages and docker solutions purporting to make it simple. Every step of the way brings new hurdles. It was when I changed the file permissions on a drive, it said it did it, then I come back and it's back as it was that I realised that this version of linux is just a lower quality user environment, with more bugs and gotchas than what I've become accustomed to in the land of Mac.
I am happy to spend some time battling a machine to achieve new ends but when doing something very ordinary with a fresh system and no special requirements this investment of time is just a waste and lets down the open source community because it shows they're still more interested in making things for each other than ordinary people.
