Friel's book is an easy to understand guide for the self-trained cyclist. Please note that this book addresses the racer. However, ambitious century riders and those who want to get the maximum effect in terms of fitness from their hours on the bike will benefit from his advice as well.

The book is certainly a great source of informatin for bike-coaches, as it is mostly about planning.
I am myself a 3 hours runner, going to do more hours on my bike for cross training. Compared to "The lore of running" the Cyclists Training bible lacks a lot of depth.
If you are really interested in TRAINING (not planning) then you might want to take a look at that book. Most information can be applied to both running and biking, after all.

The book does cover most topics concerned with biking (technic, food, equipment, etc), but only very superficially - resulting in a waste of time for me while flipping through it.
The information about periodization and year planning is quite deep. It is intended for very serious bikers, though. Those who train 5 or more days a week. Are there many of those without a coach?
