I really liked thed metaphor used in the book - garden of eden, the serpent and all - but then, somewhere along the way it lost its "grab". The beginning was good, was different, but then it turned into one of those "typical" sci-fi stories. Good and evil and all...and it wasn't wrapped up well. Of course that was done to lead up to the next book but writers need to understand that that is not what their focus should be. I understand the goal of wanting to sell series of books...but this is a bad compromise. It had a promising start though.
