He preaches a very specific concept of free will
am 7. Mai 2015
I normally am a big fan of Harris, but this time, I could not help but disagree vehemently. His definition of free will is having control not only of our will, but of every aspect of our nature and environment that interfere with our will. That is a recursion to infinity, and thus impossible from the beginning. By that definition of free will, of course he has to say we do not have any free will. If, however, he defined free will as choice among the options we have given our nature and environment, I suppose he would have to reach a different conclusion.
Disagreeing would have been okay, but the book, in spite of very short, is very repetitive. He presents the main arguments in the first 10 pages or so and just paraphrases them repeatedly afterwards. I do, however, expect it to be an exception, and that his works will normally be good as they have been before.
