Full of insights and gripping stories on strategy - a must read
am 8. April 2016
Richard Rumelt has gained a lot of experience during his life, and this book is a wonderful way of participating and experiencing what he has learned on strategy. A good strategy is about focus, about eliminating less-important clutter. A good strategy helps derive concrete action items. It is about what you want to be as an organization, a company, or a person.
I really love the many stories he is sharing from very different areas: Schools, foreign policy, heavy industry, marketing, and IT industry - a good strategy is required everywhere. And he opens your eyes so you can detect bad strategies. A bad strategy is for example: "We want to grow by 20%" or "We want to be best in class regarding customer satisfaction." These are too vague and do not help deriving action items. A good strategy focuses on a specific area you want to improve and excel. This book is full of examples.
A word of warning: After you have read this book your will view your managers all-hands meetings and your company's leadership messages in a different light. You can tell when they have a good strategy. It was an eye opener for me.
