Tough start turning into a gem!
am 25. September 2015
I really considered abandoning this book after about an hour. The start is just so hard, the author is using many made-up words and nothing really seems to fit. You keep wondering for many pages what the heck is going on, why is there a giant clock, who are these people and so on. I only kept on reading because of the good reviews I read here, so I kept hoping for some kind of turnaround.
Instead of the story changing, it was me who adapted. When the pace of the story picked up, I noticed that I suddenly identified with the main characters and actually knew most of the strange vocabulary. And then the suspence, action, philosophy and emotions kicked in. What a great story! While for me the ending was a little bit low compared to the rest of the book, it still left me with a satisfied smile on my face. This book is very long, just like all the Neil Stephenson books, but it is also very rich in ideas, action and plot twists. If you manage to survive the first hundred pages, you will not want to lay it down again!
