Interesting, but a bit slow at times

A Whodunit during America's Civil War, a female detective on top, which makes it a bit more difficult for Nell to gather the information she needs to prove, on her employer's request, that Will is innocent of the murder he's accused of.
Nell and Will are not the usual protagonists in that they sometimes are downright not likeable, although the reader follows that their actions and reactions are due to events from the past, and that especially with Will, there is a certain code of honour they follow. The reader learns these events from the past throughout the books, as together with Nell's development of the investigation, more and more of the past is revealed, and as a reader, I couldn't help but feel sorry for them on occasion.
The narration style is fluid, and somehow fitting to the time frame this story is set in, which made it quite charming, but at times a bit difficult to follow, as from time to time it was a bit slow.
All in all, a quite likeable book, with interesting characters, and a series I wouldn't mind reading more of.
