Gripping, dark novel
am 1. Januar 2014
I truly don't understand why this novel has gotten such bad reviews on amazon.de. Interestingly, the reviews on amazon.com are much more positive. It is rated almost 5 stars there.
I liked the novel through and through, from the first sentence to the description of small town Missouri, from the first hints as to who might be the murderer to the solution. I especially like the way we get to know Camille as she is finding out more about herself. As an attentive reader, you are sometimes ahead of her and what she finds out, then again I was surprised at what she found out and concluded. Everything seems to be like the doll house - out there in the open and yet almost perfectly hidden.
And I must agree with one of the other reviewers: while Camille's reason for inflicting the pain of cutting on her are extremely complex and multi-layered, they are there: we do grow to understand her behavior. It is in fact one of the strengths of this novel that it does not try to pin this behavior down to one single, obvious reason.
Maybe my being a fan of literature about small town life in the Midwest / the South (and particularly Missouri) has helped me to enjoy this novel even more - but the novel is a great psychological study of the family and dares to go beyond stereotyped views of motherhood and being a daughter. It is a great story of a grown-up person's self-discovery.
