Coming from near zero it would be hard for me to compare books for quality. However this one hit the spot for me. I needed a good overview. You can not be a live and not know something about Wicca and I have many books that refer to Wicca. However that is like reading biographies vs. autobiographies. Not saying any one is more real than the other.

Scott Cunningham’s book was not only well written but easy to follow. There were more than enough references, tables, and appendices. You were moved from what Wicca was not, including magic, to that which it is including the fundamentals of the religion. His center point being that you will never know it by just reading.

He delivers what the book promises. This book is designed for the Solitary Practitioner. And any perceived shortcomings or comparisons to more in-depth or complete books must be weighed against the purpose of this book. He also does a good job of compare and contrast to other religions with great insight.

In his discussion he skirts around, subjects as magnetism, altered-states, hypnoses, and the like. Now these subjects I can relate to and use as a reference point to begin to understand Wicca.

I am not going to rush out and buy a non-Shaker shaped broom. I already have some left over advent candles, and a place in the library for this Book.

Cunningham's books -all of them- are unpretentious, down-to-Earth, clear, concise, and easy to understand. He never comes off as a "know-it-all", nor as someone who is so rigidly "traditional" that they leave NO room at all for adaptations and customizing the basics to fit one's needs. However, at the same time, he IS providing you with good, solid, *accurate* information on which to base your belief system and spellwork. Just remember though, he was Wiccan...and not all witches ARE Wiccan...there are many other traditions of witchcraft out there. And Cunningham would be the first to say that himself. Cunningham's books are terrific for the newbie starting out, and maybe even for the intermediate level witches as well. We should always explore as much as possible.

This was the first book I read when I first became interested in Wicca. Originally I was just curious about the religion. This book gave a good explaination of what is about. It didn't bash one type of wicca over another like so many other books do. It was able to destroy some of the myths I had about wiccans. Its a good overall book for those who are just curious or are novices. I would recommend it to anyone because Scott Cunningham is really good at connecting with the reader no matter their background. A must have for everybody.

This is frequently the book that's mentioned when someone asks "how do I become a Wiccan" And while it does have alot of good starting points in it, it really has no lasting effect. Cunningham fails to do either of two things. One, explain the spirituality behind the rituals, and two, provide a complete listing of charts and references. His book "The Truth About Witchcraft Today" is easily the best book for someone who wants to examine the Wiccan faith and decide if it's right for them, or people who just want to know the truth behind it all. However, this book really doesn't make any significant leap over it. And also, he explains the pentacle as representing the element of Earth, when it is actually a symbol for the PLANET Earth, the other meaning was for ceremonial magicians. And he doesn't not use the word Witchcraft simply because he doesn't want to conjure up bad images, and in the glosary defines Witchcraft as a dead pagan religion of Old Europe. Hmmm...strange, since in'Witchcraft Today' he explicitly states that half of modern Witchcraft is folk magic, and the other half is the Wiccan religion. So much for sticking behind your word. It is strage though, since Cunningham's devotion to simplicity is what makes him one of the best, and most fundementalist, Pagan authors that ever lived, and all but two of his other books("Living Wicca" and "Magical Herbalism"), are absolute wonderworks which I fell in love with. Too bad for this one though.

I love all of Scott Cunningham's books, but this is my treasure. It was only my second book that I had ever read about the religion of Wicca. Once I was halfway through, I knew that I had found what I was looking for. I had come "home". Scott very gently guides you through information and does not preach. He writes of the history of the Craft, beliefs, laws, tools, rituals and gives guidelines for everything. His appendix section (of suggested books, music, magazines, and organizations) is very helpful and thorough. Scott includes prayers, herbs, crystal, magick, ritual, and Goddess/God information that is easy to understand. He includes a sample Book of Shadows so that a beginner knows where and how to start off. It is the book that I go back to over and over again and I cannot recommend it more highly. It is not a book on spells or magick (although he includes some in his book), but a novice's introduction to the spiritual, but practical side of Wicca. I love it and you will, too.

This book explains the basics of Wicca, or Witchcraft, in easy to understand language, what is is, why it exists, and how-to guides. Magick is inherent in ALL of us through the power of visualization. The rituals of witchcraft help us to learn this skill and maintain focus to direct our personal energy into the world to manifest needed changes. This isn't make-believe, it's real and has been confirmed by our society's scientists. What we call Goddess and God are merely two aspects of the Earth and we align ourselves in sympathy with the Earth by performing rituals in her honor. Scott's book gives several basic rituals and chants to help us focus on this subject. Candles, herbs, stones, runes, and statues are all geared to strengthening our focus on directing our own personal energy. There is a bigger world out there that we cannot see, we just need to tap into it!

One of my Reiki students gifted this book to me when I was searching for my spiritual path.
The Celtic mythology did not speak to me, but I credit this book with leading me to Shamanism.
Mr. Cunningham did an excelent job in presenting Wicca, and I HIGHLY recommend this book to others seeking their spiritual path.
Mr. Cunningham presents Wicca as nothing supernatural, but IS as natural as the earth you stand on, air that sustains life, Fire from the sun that sustains life, and water that sustains life.
I credit Mr. Cunningam for demystifying magick and stressing that magick is in the magician instead of the words or tools the magickan uses.

This book was supposedly for the solitary practitioner, right? So why did I feel like Cunningham was trying to walk me hand-in-hand through every step of my Wiccan beginning? C'mon Scott, let me think for myself! Almost half of the book is his own Book of Shadows, which sucks by the way. If you're a beginner look for Jennifer Hunter's "21st Century Wicca", it's a much better book with more practical info for the beginner. If you absolutely NEED something to read, Cunningham's book will suffice, but wait for your initiation until after you've read Hunter!
