Great music, classic album...awful mastering
am 25. Juni 2016
In case this review is thrown into all releases of this title, my review is specifically for the Speaker Corner reissue of the album on vinyl (Amazon ASIN number B00RQJPO4A).
Speakers Corner has reissued yet another poor sounding record. I don't know exactly what went wrong with this one, but the sound on this record has a lot of limiting on it. (Not the "brick wall" limiting common to digital products, but more like the limiting you hear on AM radio--there is a lot of "pumping" to the volume that is not present even on the official CTi CD.) It is painful to listen to. The pressing quality is quite nice, but that does not make up for the wonky sound. Avoid this one, and seek out the 2-LP 45RPM version from ORG--that one sounds fantastic, and was cut from the original tapes by Bernie Grundman. You will hear details you never knew were in the music.
Of the three Jobim albums on CTi (Wave, Tide and Stone Flower), this one has to be my favorite. It has a very relaxing, subdued yet slightly dark mood compared to the other two. Having been more of an A&M collector over the years, I have only discovered this album within the past 12 years and it has grown to be one of the favorites of mine in Jobim's body of work. Highly recommended for the music, but, please steer clear of the terrible Speaker Corner pressing. It is truly horrible.
