Perfect for Gray weather
am 12. November 2000
I bought this album in the summer and hated it at first. It just sounded so mournful and miserable that I just couldn't listen to it. Some of the tracks even made me nauseous, especially singing of the bottle and the mountain top. It seemed that I had only bought the album for the monumental 'Babylon'.
But then I heard 'Please Forgive Me' on the radio, and I began to like that too. There is one track where there does seem to be an evocative vinyl hiss, and it may be that CD perfection does no justice to David Gray. And seeing David Gray's chirpy cheerful face on the video for 'Please Forgive Me' did change the tone of the song for me.
Maybe I have too much of a dreading when I hear that phrase 'singer/songwriter'. However, I think it's the tunes I've started like a bit more now. Overall, this album has been the steretypical 'love/hate relationship' for me. I like it much more now that the longer winter nights have arrived in the northern hemisphere. My mood has changed to fit David Gray's soulful music.
