Rothenberger is a trifle "old" sounding for young Sylva (the voice is no longer fresh), but sings well of course. Ditto for the "Stasi" - a heavy voice. The Boni has good resonance, with clear diction and a good sense of comedy. Nicolai Gedda sounds fervent as Edwin, but some of the added top notes sound unpleasantly forced. A solo has been added for him in Act I which drags somewhat. The orchestra is full of verve. Dialogue (in German) is kept to a minimum. I would have preferred younger-sounding soloists, but the music itself is sparkling.
