Compelling and masterful

I don't think I've ever read a book of this nature before, and if to begin with I was simply repeating to myself, "I don't like the characters", by the end I realized that whatever I felt for them, I believed in them.
I simply got caught up in the compelling story, and had trouble putting it down because I wanted to know what was round the next corner.
A word of caution: if you think the first 1/3 of the book is predictable, keep reading, as there are plenty of surprises along the way, and if nothing else, the style keeps you going… At least it did for me. Quick, pithy, unnervingly true about the way people think... I think...
In all honesty, I didn't like the ending in terms of plot, but I can see the internal logic of wishing to end the story that way. The rest of the read was fascinating. The analysis of the motivations and personalities does not go beyond certain limits, toppling into the fantastical, but remains very grounded in credible personalities. I wondered on more than one occasion just how much of a Nick there might be in me. Or an Amy, for that matter... Scary! But "fun-scary".
