Good introduction, but...
am 7. April 2006
The overall systematic approach to German - English translation proposed by the book is really interesting and the introductory semiotics portion is fascinating, but going into detail I found a lot to criticize. The author seems to filter possible translations excluding those, which do not support his thesis - for example:
For difficulties with Kollektivbegriffe in German he suggests using plural forms in English - Geschwister = brothers and sisters (but what about „siblings")
Leiden = sufferings (but what about „misery")
He also uses a lot of very bizarre sounding English „original" text examples like:
„This story bears resemblances to a story I read some weeks ago."
or „Western man subordinated religious loyalties to national ones.
or he suggests, aches and pains = starke Schmerzen (als Müttersprachlerin denkt man da eher an Wehwehchen).
