I picked up this book hoping that for me, who is new to Angularjs, it will help me understand how directives work and give me a few good ideas on where to use them. But I'm very disappointed by this book. It's definitely not a book to read when you want to start with directives.
If I wanted to explain something that can be done in two different ways, I would explain one way and then the other. Alex Vanston prefers to explain only the differences between the two ways. He also gives some code examples that would normally help understand the concepts. But unfortunately, I was left wondering what the code actually does. Yes, they are code examples, but without any explanation of what the code does, I'm left as stupid as before.
I will probably try to tread this book again after working with directives for a while. I'm sure it will help me understand the details and will help me figure out how to get the most out of directives. But for now, this book is worthless.
