This could have been entitled, Larry Manetti: My Life. It starts with the actor's life story. That may seem like a rip off of Magnum's name in the book, but it's not. Larry begins with his early life but when he gets to Hollywood and then Magnum P.I, it's well worth the wait. Manetti gives great insight into all of the T.V. shows characters and the fact that they got along famously from the beginning. This is a fun book. I laughed and almost cried. It sure made me want to see a movie soon. There is also a recipe section as Larry is a great cook and a section in the back with all of the episodes with facts about the episode, actors and plots. They are even dated and given episode numbers. If you loved the series and long for a movie, then you'll love this book. Larry! I hope the burns on your hand have healed.
This book was fun to read but I wish Mr. Manetti would have included more behind the scenes 'what were they like' type of thing with more of the guest stars and recurring guests that appeared on the show. More photos would have been nice too. I really like the listing of all the episodes included in the back of the book as I didn't realize I'd missed seeing so many; now I can watch for them on A&E. Overall, the book was good, funny and an easy relaxing read. Many times I found myself laughing out loud over some of the stories. I hope Universal will go ahead with the idea of a Magnum movie, wether a feature film or several 2-hour movies for television as mentioned in the book. With all the Magnum fans I know a feature would be a success! Go for it Universal!
For those of us who got hooked on the 80's TV series this book is an overdue treat. Lot's of good photo's and at least a few interesting insights into the making of the series from on of the co-stars. I was disappointed, however, in the superficial treatment given to the relationships between the show's regulars. One day perhaps we'll learn what it was really like to be cooped up on a lava rock in the middle of the Pacific with a nonstop fan contingent hungry to learn about your every move. There has to be some interesting stories in there somewhere. In any case, the book does bring back some warm memories of those Thursday nights spent in front of the tube just wishing I could be half as cool as Tom Magnum.
Finally, a look behind the scenes of the best shows of the century! It makes me yearn for the old days with Thomas, Higgie-baby, T.C., Rick, Ice Pick, and, of course, the lads, Zeus and Apollo. And who could forget that Ferrari and all the babes Magnum got? The book really captures the spirit of the show. I am going to dig out of my closet my gorilla mask, Tigers' hat, and rubber chicken, and hope they make the Magnum movie soon!!!
I highly recommend Larry Manetti's new book to all fans of the show Magnum, P.I. The cast had a great on screen chemistry and it was nice to find out that they shared the same friendship off screen. Mr. Manetti has lived a charm life and I enjoyed reading about his associations with Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson etc. I have a question for the author: I could not find the Ringo Starr anecdote. Larry, please elaborate. Thank you!
Larry Manetti's book Aloha Magnum is really an awesome book. Tells all kinds of interesting stories about the show and behind the scenes. The recipes are great and the episode guide is wonderful. It's great to see that they all really did get along on and off the set. Thanks for writing such a wonderful book Larry and giving everyone the oppertunity to learn more about you and the show!
A fast and fun read! Great stories and behind the scenes experiences. A must own for any Magnum fan. Hopefully, with the release of this book over ten years after the show went off the air, Universal Studios will realize that there is a HUGE and loyal following to the show, get off their rumps, and make the Magnum MOVIE already (which Tom Clancy has already penned the script for).
