They were heroes and poets of the sixties and seventies, expressing the spirit of the times. I am an owner of this book approximately 29 years. It is a Czech version of this publications from 1969, by czechoslovak"Panton" editorship./It was difficult/hard/era of our history after Soviet invasion in 1968./I'am living now in Slovakia and this book/from 1969/ is rarity in our country. In our difficult era it was one of my favourite books that gave me enjoyment and sanguineness. It was a symbol of love a peace for me and our friends.I was very surprised by reedition of this beautiful book after many years in USA/?/.But I don't know, if it is original version until "White Double" album era, or if it is "extended" version including the beatle-songs /and pictures/ from "Abbey Road" and "Let It Be" albums.Send me, please, some informations about it. Thank You . dr.Havelka.
No reviews, no bios, just great lyrics and good art. This book was originally published during the late 60s, and so the art reflects the time. My only complaint: "Two of Us" is not about Paul and Linda (as the picture suggests), it's about the friendship of John and Paul (lines like "you and I have memories, longer than the road that stretches out ahead" make little sense in regard to Linda; Paul had only recently met her at the time of the song's writing, and he went on to spend the next 30 years with her). That aside, I say no Beatle library is complete without it.
It's very interesting to see how artists from around the world envisioned Beatles songs in their minds. Many of the songs seem to take on new meaning when you look at the accompanying illustrations. As a former Fulbright Scholar teaching high school English in Korea, I also used this book whenever I taught pop songs. I would copy a set of lyrics and illustrations and then distribute them to the class. The students loved it! It made the song lessons much more interesting.
This book is utterly inspiring. The music of the Beatles is legendary, and the way the artists re-create the songs into art is visionary and fascinating. Plus, it's not bad having the lyrics handy, too. A must-have for all Beatlemaniacs!
The re-issuing of this classic attests to the amazing way in which The Beatles inspired other artists to create and to dream. Alan Aldridge proved that still, 30 years on, this book was way ahead of its time. I cherish my original copy.
This is a good book. The pictures are totally far-out, and the lyrics are nice for those of us who ocassionally need help with the words to a song. I'd recomend this book if you're looking for an interesting read.
I remember getting these books in 1969 and being completely blown away by the concept of illustrating lyrics. This is MTV before video skewed our artistic vision. The Beatles really did change the world.
