The word permaculture was originally created from "permanent agriculture". The concepts for a sustainable, ecological agriculture, which rather works with nature, not against her, soon raised the question if it would be possible to adapt similar principles for a social system, hence creating a "permanent culture", i.e. a socio-economical system that by cooperation, science and care would be sustainable and guarantee a maximum yield (life quality) for everyone.
This brochure is a nice introduction into permaculture, full of illustrations and tables, and even contains a complex mindmap on the topic.
