Three months ago, my cousin, Josh, died very suddenly. I am 17 years old and he was only 18, we were very close. Since that time, I have had a lot of trouble dealing with his death and trying to understand it. My aunt sent me a copy of this book for Easter and it made the realization of his death more peaceful for me. It helped me to see this experience as not only a very painful and terrible one, but one that will make me stronger and will teach me a lot. This book helped to ease the pain of no longer being able to see Josh and know how he's doing. It made me accept that he's in a better place now and that he's being taken care of. Most of all, it reminded me that although I won't see his face or hear his voice anymore, he'll always be with me and I will always be with him. I hope every person, young and old, who has experienced a death, whether through family or friends, will get a chance to read this book. While the pain they're dealing with can never fully be resolved, this book will definitely help to ease it,

I WAS SO ATTRACTED BY THE BOOK'S COVER THAT I OPENED THE BOOK AND BEGAN TO READ IT. (I HAD BEEN AGONIZING OVER MY FATHER'S ILLNESS AND KNEW IT WAS A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE I WOULD BE FACED WITH HIS DEATH.) AS I CONTINUED TO READ "THE NEXT PLACE" WHILE STANDING IN THE BOOKSTORE, I BEGAN TO FEEL PEACE I HAD THOUGHT WOULD NEVER RETURN. EACH PAGE WAS SO BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED AND EACH PHRASE SO COMFORTING. I BOUGHT THE BOOK. I READ IT TO MY FAMILY AS WE WERE GATHERED AROUND MY FATHER'S BED, JUST MINUTES AFTER HIS DEATH. I ALSO READ IT DURING HIS FUNERAL MASS. IT SAID ALL THAT NEEDED SAYING BECAUSE DAD WAS, AT LAST, "PERFECT". I HAVE SENT "THE NEXT PLACE", IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, TO FRIENDS WHO HAVE LOST LOVED ONES. THE REACTION IS ALWAYS HUGS, TEARS AND GRATITUDE.

I came across this book when part of it was read out at a funeral I was taking. Later the daughter of the deceased gave me a copy. Since then I have used words from it at other funerals (by request) and recently gave a copy to a lady who was dying and her husband. Her husband has since asked for me to read part of it at her service. The vocabulary is simple and the pictures are stunning. The concepts and images they release in the mind are complex beyond other words. I don't know if the author has written from a specifically Christian viewpoint but I do know that this specifically Christian priest has no hesitation in recommending it as a genuine gift from God.

"The Next Place" moved me in intellectural and spiritual ways. It challenged me well to think beyond conventionally religious descriptions of the next world, and to accept the uncertainty of what happens to us after we die. Although its visuals and text compel the reader from one page to the next, the conceptions of the "next place" clearly made me think and contemplate my own visions, hopes and fears about death. I would recommend this book for anyone over the age of ten, or even for those younger than 10 who can deal with the concept of loss in more mature ways.

This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen to help a child cope with the loss of a loved one. It is beautiful not only in word, but in the stunning and creative images it contains. Adults reading it to a child will also benefit, as the words are powerful, and conducive to further sharing and discussion.
It can be used by any parent trying to respond to the inevitable child's question "What happens when you die?" whether or not a loved one has recently died. Simple, yet profound, lovely and comforting. (We've given more than a dozen to family and friends!)

I am a 17 year girl and recently, my great-grandma died. My family went to her town for the funeral and to support her companion of 21 years, Ben. We had heard of this book before, so we thought it would be helpful to buy it for Ben. Towards the end of the funeral, I had a sudden sensation to share the book with everyone there. So I asked the minister and he called me up and I read the whole book at the funeral. It was a very touching experience to everyone present. This book brings peace and closure to those grieving the loss of a loved one.

A friend of mine sent me this book when we found out that my daughter wasn't going to survive her illness. My daughter who was 3 yrs old said to me, "So this is what heaven is like". I told her that there was nothing to be afraid of. And that when she did go to heaven she wouldn't be sick anymore and that she would be perfect. She had us read this book to her everyday until she passed on. Even now it is a great source of comfort to me as I read this book. To know that my little angel is up there looking down on me.

My first exposure to Warren Hanson's poetry and the beautiful illustrations in The Next Place was at my mother's funeral. It was read as part of the funeral service. This lovely, peaceful yet hopeful book for children may have been written to help the adult explain death to a child. But in doing so the adult affirms their own belief of life beyond this world....The Next Place. I hope this book never goes out of print because it has become my personal way of helping my friends, their children and grandchildren through loss.

This book came into the lives of my children at a very important time in their development. When, "you go to heaven when you die" just wasn't enough. It offered a noninvasive, yet satisfactory and poetic explaination of "what will happen to me mom when I die". It has quelled a fear my daughter (and I) has been haunted by for the past year, like no religious based book or pamphlet for kids seemed to be able to do. All that aside. It is simply beautiful. A must for any human still enhabiting the earth!

The comforting words in this book presents a kind and wonderfulimage of death; reinforcing that our relationship with the person hasnot ended. As a first grade teacher I read it to my class to ease the consuming concern one of my little girls has had about a young uncle who died suddenly from a heart attack. She told me twice that day that she feels better now. This book integrates comforting script with such beautiful illustrations and use of color and design that all I've shown it to are moved.
