this series along with Otherland by Tad Williams is excellent. this first book however dedicated a lot of time to the principle character - which in the beginning bored me a little bit - but, since it was so well written I still managed to read every last word - in the following books the pace is faster and ... the in depth time you spend with the main character in the beginning gives you I think the emotional impression that the author wants - the accompanying of the young-man to man transition in a personal way.

Intense story and incredibly beatiful style is what makes Tad Williams books in this trilogy really formidable experiences.
If you liked the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter or Game of Thrones you will love this as well.
I do hope for a movie adaptation.

TAD WILLIAMS is a great author, his writting is fantastic and his characterisation superb (though not perfect. Tolkien rules, Feist comes close and Goodkind isn't bad either) All this said, i have to continue to say that his book is one of the LEAST origional fantasy I have read. Feists MAGICIAN (published long before Williams) centered itself around Pug, a castle orphan who is caught in the middle. Simon is Pug all over again, and again, and again. His circumstances, his nature, his ineptitude are all the same. Morgenes is Kulgan, from MAGICIAN. The mysterious, but kindly, magician who sees more in pug/simon than anyone else and makes him his apprentice. The SITHI are incredibly similar to GOODKIND's FORBIDDEN. But all this aside (and I could go on and on) it is a good read. Fun, well written, it is worth continuing with.

If you love fantasy, especially dealing with elves, "MEMORY,SORROW,and THORN" will thrill you. As for those who claim that Tad borrowed from Tolkien, Tolkien is an average writer compared to Tad Williams! Williams' characterization is unbelievably superb, his descriptions are fascinating, and his plot is truely inspired. The only gripes I have with this series are: That the last book was wrapped up too quickly; and that Miriamele (the heroine) was rather fake. The best thing about Williams is that he can invent many characters of many types, and bring them all to life (except Miriamele). The books are balanced perfectly between the hero's personal problems and the globe's problems. Even though this series is almost 3,000 pages, you will be entranced until the very end!!!!!!! Buy it! Read it! Read it again!

I have been reading fantasy for years, but this is the first series I actually felt compelled to write the author about and say thank you. While some readers find the first few chapters slow, I did not. Williams does such a great job with his characters that I was pulled right in. Simon is such a wonderful portrayal of a boy growing into manhood - longing for adventure and not sure he wants it when it comes. The harpers never mention how cold, hungry and scary having an adventure is or how you become responsible for other people and events. The character development of Binabik, Mirimele and all the others is just as intriguing. Characters actually grow and change in his books. If you like character driven fantasy, this book is a must.

Tad Williams' The Dragonbone Chair was a good, original story with great characters. The Hero, Simon, was a none too bright kitchen boy who managed to get himself mixed up in things beyond his understanding. The book was written well, and although the characters are very well described, Tad Williams went into too much detail about everything else - he described everything he saw in great detail, telling the history of the object as well as the impact it had on the story. It didn't matter whether the object was a dead leaf or a great stone castle, you would know everything about it within a few minutes.
Other than the amount of detail in the book, it was a good, entertaining story which made me want to read the rest of the series.

Being a big fan of fantasy & sci-fi series, I cannot recommend too highly Tad Williams' "Dragonbone Chair" trilogy. What sets this series apart from so many others is the author's ability to introduce a variety of characters in Book #1 and then keep us interested in them all throughout the series. Each chapter skips to a different character (or group of characters) while bringing us in to an exciting and suspenseful climax. I never realized that each of the paperbacks was over 700 pages long and I could not wait to begin on the next. My only regret is that the series was only 3 books long - not like the ever continuing Jordan saga.
