This book is far and away the greatest book I've ever read. As a student of miltary history, I find this to be the best description of combat and it takes me as close to combat as I ever want to come.

Another stormer from Ambrose! Well researched and excellently portrayed and put together to give a vivid and accurate account of E Company's trials and tribulations. DEFINATELY worth the read.

I thought that this one was not quite as good, as D-Day or Citizen Soldiers, but it still kept me up late reading. It's an interesting look at the inner workings of a single group of men.

Stephen Ambrose's work should be mandatory reading for every American high school student. Superb, factual, no-holds-barred account of the sacrifices made by our forefathers during WWII.

Absolutely gripping from start to finish. Another Ambrose tale from the heart of the American soldier. A wonderful reminder of what we owe to those who serve.

Oral history at its finest. Sadly, the World War 2 generation is dying away, and its books such as these that provide the living memory

As an interest person of literature about war i ve read a lot of books (german and english ones). I didnt liked the book mainly of two reasons.
1.) Too much glorification. Like a other recesion says. The book is full of "yankee doodledoo?!?" After the war its normal that the veterans only talking about the good thing of war. The humankind forgets the bad things very fast. This glorification of batteltimesoldiers is written down 1:1 in the book. I missed the distance for the crueal and unhappy things in war.
One example i can remember is that the narrator claims that in the usarmy never happend looting. 10 pages later he writes down where E-company looted. This stuff of a clean army is telling me my grandpa about the German Reichwehr, too.
2.) I didnt liked the narator role. He wrote the book like an historian saying it from above. Positiv is that there a a lot of historical facts in it an that one can see the bigger war circus. Negativ for me is that through this the book was written llike an history book. An partly it was that boring, too.
Finaly i would say that too watch the movie is more interesting than reading the book. And it happens not to often that i say this.
