Peters zeros in on innovation as the touchstone for success, along with a passionate presentation of fifteen other related ideas such as: distance is dead; destruction is cool; we are all Michelangelos; welcome to the white - collar revolution; the intermediary is doomed; and the system is the solution.
The book's visual layout model's its theme which is - It is the end of the world as we know it, so whatever made you successful in the past won't in the future. What, then, can you do? The answer is...innovation!
This is another WOW book, exuding the excitement and novelty that makes Tom Peters, himself, a living example of what he passionately and entertainingly writes about. Peters delivers content in a form that breaks all book 'rules,' using a plethora of P. T. Barnum pizazz. Among business books, that's innovative!
Peter's is always trying to write at the EDGE. I don't think he expects or wants you to read this book...no sir...he wants you to EXPERIENCE it in the way you might experience leaping into a cold pool first at dawn. But come to think about it, the book is more like a roller-coaster ride, with zigs and zags and lots of ZIP!. Still, for all its flare, this is not a ground-breaking work, falling a wee bit short of Peters' "Liberation Management." Highly recommended. THE CIRCLE OF INNOVATION is written in slide book form. This is the form that consultants use for seminars. Each exhibit that the seminar attendees will see is included, along with a page of script that covers the content of the exhibit. The result is highly enjoyable, as you vicariously imagine being in the room with Tom Peters, the world's most sought-after business speaker. The exhibits are wonderfully funny and evocative, and use all kinds of visual tricks to get and keep your attention. I had people all over the plane looking over my shoulder to see them, as I read the book on a recent flight. Tom Peters also walks his talk, and really lives with passion -- which strongly comes through in this book. His interpretations of the world are almost always tied to quotes from important thinkers and business leaders, which gives the book a relevance and immediacy that a more cerebral book would have lacked. I found this book to be very satisfying to read. It affected me at a very fundamental level, so I could tell that I was "getting" the message. The result is a most impressive example of a way to communicate through books. The principles seem to be sound in most cases (although not all markets are dominated by women purchasers -- such as boxing gloves -- but many are such as cars), and they should stimulate your thinking to expand the scope of the innovations you think about. The book could have been improved with a consideration of processes that work better than others for getting the innovation work done. For that assistance, you will have to look elsewhere. In the meantime, do read, think about, enjoy, and apply the lessons of THE CIRCLE OF INNOVATION.

Save your money because there are far better business books available. I purchased Tom Peters' Circle of Innovation based on the recommendation from a business associate. As soon as the book arrived I realized that I had wasted nearly $25.00. Tom Peters saw an opportunity and has packaged his business notes in order to earn another million. There are few new thoughts in the book. The writing style is breathless like the evening news, and the graphical presentation is similar to a comic book.
Other business books are far better. Tom Peters, with his top-tier business school and consulting credentials, may claim to understand enterprise but Tom Peters needs to get his hands dirty with honest experience. Other authors such as Ricardo Semler in Maverick actually accomplished what Tom Peters discusses. Instead of reading Tom Peters talk about change and the future, read Ricardo Semler describing implementing actual change in a company. And then look out if a compa! ny following Semler's ideas decides to compete in your industry.
Tom Peters has great promise, but I believe that he needs actual business experience to complete his resume. He appears to lack the commitment, passion, and the deeper understanding that can only come from actually implementing ideas and living with the results and the criticism.
After reading Circle of Innovation, my one overriding desire was to ask Mr. Peters for a full price refund.

Thinking of re-inventing yourself this year? Read this book. Why? In 15 chapters, Peters employs his uncommon sense in transforming the must-do trends of the 1990's into fodder for closing out the twenty-first century. Organizational learning is ground into organizational forgetting; the science of systems is grated into arguments for attitude and tapping the potential of the EQ. You get the picture: it's stuff you don't know about stuff you already know.
Okay, but how does it read? Like The Pursuit of Wow!, The Circle of Innovation has graphic appeal that makes clear Peters' uncommon sense. Captions under the heading "B-I-G IDEA" pull out core themes; pictures convey the emotional thrust of the book, which is enthusiasm in warp speed; and various sized fonts offer explanation and challenge when read closely.
But you've said nothing of the title, CIRCLE of INNOVATION. Each of the 15 chapters are intense planets of thought that orbit around a metaphoric sun of innovation. Like the sun's gravitational pull, innovation also pulls. It pulls through a compulsion to change, change substantially.
So, how about it--ready for a change this year? Peters is ready to shake your universe!

Tom Peters points out (as he has done so many times before) that most of us are focusing on doing Yesterday a little better, instead of creating a much better Tomorrow. The themes of this book will seem familar at first, until you see how Peters turns them on their heads in highly innovative ways. This is like having all of your ideas shaken up like a James Bond martini. After you finish with the excitement (he captures his seminar technique in book form, rather than writing a traditional book), you will be ready for THE 2,000 PERCENT SOLUTION which has an eight-step process for innovation that gives you a system for implementing what Peters talks about. I especially liked the many quotes from a variety of successful and unsuccessful executives, and the many humorous pictures -- they really help to bring home the message. Have fun reading this book, and then have even more fun living it. Peters even encourages you to be messy (compulsive types beware!). Get this book right away and keep rereading it until you change what you are doing to focus on innovation rather than stewardship of the past.

For the last fifteen years, Tom Peters has written a collection of "story books" illustrating the best (and sometimes the worst) management practices. For those of us that eat, drink and sleep this "TP stuff" (the books, workshops, seminars, audio cassettes, videos, etc)this book stands out. Photos, (worth a bunch of words), even circles and arrows and the stories. These are the stories that will be retold around the corporate campfires (watercoolers, chat rooms and board room tables) for years to come. For me Tom's books have always been a call to action, a wake up call to get up and do something, anything to move the business foward. The Circle of Innovation has less information than some of his earlier books, but it is more focused on a few important (and useful, today)ideas. Ideas that are so simple and obvious..."why didn't I think of that" Keep them coming Tom, you make a difference.

While there are some good observations in the text, project focus, trust etc. There are also some very poor observations as well. Example: Kaizen and Six Sigma are an "inadvertent obsession with polishing yesterday's paradigm". What dribble. How can we hope to maintain our current customer loyalty if we don't strive to control our variability while we are tearing down old paradigms. Seeking to place blame for our lack of innovation is a direct response to poor management and reward and recognition systems inside our organizations. For this book to suggest and/or blame the lack of inovation in our organizations on continuous improvement and six sigma BREAKTHROUGH strategy is a not only incorrect, but dangerous.

Good mornig, As you said in your book, finding a book dealing with innovation is not that easy. At last, I found your, and I really enjoy reading it. As a metter of fact, I am writing a memory for my studies dealing with attitudes of consumption and innovation, that is to say I try to analyse the correlation beetween both. And your book is a wonderful source of information. That's why I write you today, as you gave you e mail in your book. In addition to what I learned, I really have funny time, and I hope you will answer me as I would like.
Thank you for having such a good idea, and say me good luck for the end of my studies !!! Stephanie CAZENAVE - FRANCE - BORDEAUX
