I am Italian/Swiss who loves cooking over anything...I do world cuisine and love the Mediterranean in particular. Rick Stein is a big mentor to me for his excellent cooking skills, especially when it comes to seafood! The Mediterranean Escape Book has for long been one of my top favourite books by Rick Stein! I truly recommend it! I have also always loved Rick Steins love and enthusiasm to go out and travel to the most marvellous places for fine food in this world. He is a fine food travel guide, who also always knows all the background stories about the food culture and history of the places he visits. He is also very close to the native people he meets and, encourages and motivates his readers and viewers to go see and discover genuine and authentic food by travelling - one of the most vital and precious counsels he gives when it comes to discouver and learn about world food culture. I honestly would like to encourage any food lover and cook, be it professional or not, to check out also on the many books and films Rick Stein has published so far on South East Asia, India, Spain, France and also Istambul etc..... Books that are true gems in any good collection of coking books! Enjoy!
Wonderful book at first sight but although some recipes are really great others according to me aren't. I am a fan of Rick Stein and love his passion for food but this book for me is more a wonderful coffee table book. As I said some recipes are really great but others, although I tried them with great expectations, either they didn't live up to it or else I have a bit the same recipes but with a twist that makes them more interesting, like the Octopus Salad. In my country, Portugal, not included here because it is not really a Mediterranean country although often considered to be one (we are not on the Mediterranean, no doubt about that) restaurants often serve Octopus Salad and they are a lot better. The recipe I make comes from a Portuguese Magazine and it is an Octopus Salad with an Asian dressing, wonderful. Still, I will go on trying more recipes, maybe in the end there will be more good than less good ones!
Recipes we liked so far: Tomato, Roasted Red Pepper and onion salad with preserved lemon; Oven-baked potatoes, peppers, tomatoes and onions (I preferred it without potatoes, my husband with....), Sauttéed squid; Roasted Monfish; Sea bream with Sauce Vierge; Slow cooked Lamb with Garlic; Lam Tagine; Butter beans in tomato sauce;
