Starte reading these books shortly before Christmas and now I am on Book 8, simply cannot turn my Kindle off, some of the things I can relate to being ex-soldier, some things are obviously totally over cooked but on a whole these books bring me back to the times spent on training excercise sitting in a wagon for days on end with nothing to do but read and read and read.

US Vice president-to-be Senator Brook Armstrong has received a series of anonymous death threats. Now Secret Service agent M.E. Froelich needs to uncover their source and ascertain the effectiveness of Armstrong's security detail. For this task Froelich needs an outsider and hires ex-military cop Jack Reacher to attempt a fake assassination of Armstrong. With ease Reacher is able to compromises the security coverage. Froelich, who also is the former lover of Reacher's late brother Joe, now needs Reacher to develop a better system and to figure out how warning letters to Armstrong are being delivered to the Secret Service and whether the senator is at risk because of something political or personal...
First of all this book reminds me most of "The Visitor / Running Blind" because again Reacher works together with the authorities and because the hunt for "who did it" is a very similar plot. As a change from the previous five novels Reacher does not do the job purely on his own but enlists the aid of former U.S. Army master sergeant Frances Neagley. This is the biggest deviation from Lee Child's earlier books. Otherwise the writing style and the pace are very similar.
The book has some weakness regarding the question for the motive: Why does it take about a third of the book before anybody asks WHY does anybody want to kill the Vice President (instead of the President)? This should have come way earlier! On top of that parts of the showdown in the end are a bit disappointing and ridiculous.
Of course this book has to have a flaw that kind of comes with the Reacher character: You can always argue how possible or likely it is that Reacher always knows more then every other well-trained person around who does a certain job for years.
Does all that is said above make "Without Fail" a bad book that should not be read? No!
The basic story of the book is very interesting (and makes a lot more sense than its disappointing predecessor "Echo Burning"). The book is well written and very entertaining so it kept me reading and guessing on and on. It also features some David Copperfield tricks of getting messages into the Secret Service which are really fun to unravel. And hey - I got to admit I really like this Reacher character a lot.
From Lee Child's six novels I would rank this book in third place - after "The Visitor / Running Blind" and especially behind "Killing Floor".

I do not know why I found this to be a less interesting book that the other Reacher's ,but I found myself waiting for the action to start. What was really going on? OK it was hot, weather plays key parts in Lee Child's books and that is fine, but here the weather was the point it seemed. It could be that the location was too static, I do not know. This book lacked the tracking and deductive elements of some of the others, not much interaction with the charachters either.I would say read it, but just enjoy Reacher as best you can, however it was sadly not nearly as good as all of his other books.

I enjoyed it very much. However, Lee Child tends to use high-level conspiracies, which makes for powerful opponents, who are larger than life, however.

One should not read one Reacher book after the other, I would say. It is better to read something else in between ...
