Up-to-date, reasonably accurate, and anything-but-dull.

I had read a few other histories of Russia, most of which were either too condensed, too old or too polarising.
Despite some negative feedback on the US Amazon website, I ordered this book, in large part because it went to press less than 5 years ago, making it one of the newest accounts of Russian history. I found the book very informational, well-written and proofread, and stylistically comfortable. Overall, I found it a uniquely informative resource.
It perhaps bears mentioning that Sixsmith did disappoint me in the end with his (not unexpected) negative prognosis for Russia's future, complete with an almost entirely unsympathetic assessment of Vladimir Putin.
That one 'flaw' (from my point of view) doesn't prevent me from giving the book five stars. I heartily recommend it to anyone interested in an anything-but-dull account of Russia's history over roughly the past millennium.
