Nice read, not easy to feel it
am 26. Mai 2014
I generally like books of Nora Roberts. After the Brides Quartet books and the Inn Boonsboro Trilogy, which I just loved, because of the intimacy and the characters that are so easy to feel with, to identificate with, I so hoped, that the Cousins O'Dwyer Trilogy would follow this path.
I have to say: Dark Witch didn't do that for me. I liked the story, it was a nice and easy read, the story made sense... technically, no complaints. But I just didn't get that feeling. That flow you get when you're happy and excited about the characters experiences and developments.
Maybe it was because Iona just came to Ireland, she hasn't the deep bonds, the friendship, that deep belonging, which may be the base of what I liked at the other books mentioned. But her development in the book is basically about that. About finally belonging, about making friends, about bonds and everything, and whilst it is just exactly as it should be I really didn't get the feeling that the bonds, the belonging, the friends and the love where deep and emotionally satisfying. Even though it said in the book they were, but it just didn't click for me.
I already read the second book Shadow Spell, because I hoped, that it would be more easy for me to get into the flow with characters, that already lived and belonged in the setting for a while. But that to didn't do it for me. Again nice read, but the click ist missing.
And finally... the flashbacks to the past... I really found them boring. Yes it is nice to have a backround, but really, the first 10 percent of the first book is about what happens in the past. I know that it is essential for the story but did it have to be that long?
Despite all said, I will buy the final book, too. It is an easy and nice read, despite my lack of feeling with the characters. Maybe I will read the first two again, maybe I rushed them and therefore missed the click. It's a long time til November.
