An average battle account
am 29. Januar 2007
This book gives the account of Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan.
The operation in itself was a failure since it failed to reach the objectives; destroy enemy forces and capture their leaders. This was the result of a failure by American intelligence to make a proper assessment of the battleground and the opponent and the consequences this had for planning. It also shows the dangers of unclear chains of command, one of the main reasons why the operation failed.
Even if the account of the battle is vivid and it is obvious that the author was present, it still lacks the finesse and touch of reality that is found in Herr's "Dispatches", to name one example.
It is this failure to convey the reality of the battlegound that, ultimately, leads to the conclusion that this book is an average battle account.
