I found the book to have carefully concocted Anti-Germanism all over it. I found it awful. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who decides to travel to Germany. Unless of course you enjoy to scorn at German culture and European culture as a whole.

Peace out.

as native inhabitant of this country which is found to be similarly excentric as eg. (guess who) this book is for me interesting reading not only as a foreigners report about his impressions of Germany. In fact, Winder shows a fairly broad and a sometimes enviable deep knowledge and interest in my home country and its history. However, a couple of some further qualities shine through defining his perspective on this issue: Protestant with good background about Catholic belief, strong interest in medieval and early modern germany, awareness of influences from neighboring societies on a country without a predominant centre of power, political, religious, and economic, and keeping an eye on ways historical events take influence on developments and perceptions in following times, sometimes even today.

While reading his book, it's important to keep in mind, that he's picking raisins and nuts from his cake, yet not necessarily from the top ... so if the subject was a real cake, it would be a quite devasted one after his treatment ;-) So, for those trying to start into german history and geography, I would recommend to have some good maps of german regions and at least a concise survey of german history at hand. The book has couple of pages which are rather packed with informations and remarks. Compared to Bryson's style of writing, Winder's book has more content about history than about personal experiences during his journeys.

Since the order of mentioned places and events is not really chronological and not at all geographical, reading Winder's book from its first to its last page is probably the best way. However, due to his rather anecdotal style of writing and only few cross references within the book itself single chapters can be read separately as well.

As a german I find so called outside views intriguing ... I have just read a third of the book only, but sorry I have to contradict the review above. I do not know what people expect but this book is (very, very likely) not intended as a guide; I expected a personal view of Germany and the Germans by an Englishman - that's exactly what it is! I recommend it on the ground that I learnt something respectively refreshed my knowledge of this and that. For my taste, I like the humorous style and it is not superficial!

The book is by no means an exhaustive account of German history, but rather a series of musings on Germans and Germany from a man who has studied its history thoroughly. It does capture the feeling of traveling through country and it helps tie strange impressions together. This is probably the history book most historians would have chosen to write had they been at liberty to do so.

Herr Windel hat sehr viele Informationen zusammengetragen, die dazu beitragen, dass die Ursachen und Folgen der Kleinstaaterei verständlicher werden. Er macht es auf humorvolle, unverkrampfte Weise.

i found the contet pages utterly unhelpfull in helping the reader to get a grip of this book

for example - one headline is `the tideless sea
why cant the author write`the baltic sea`?
most of the headlines give no clue as to what the writing is about

and then there are 15 chapters which are just .....numberd

after half of the book i gave up because no signposts where offerd to my brain to cling to

what a waste
