I do read a lot but I haven't read anything this good in a long time! "State of the Union" tells you the story of Hannah Buchan starting from her days in college during the late sixties and early seventies and then jumping to the year 2003.
Not being interested in reforming the American nation as her intellectual, inspiring and famous father, she marries early and settles down for a quiet life with her very nice but not very interesting doctor. But Hannah takes one short but fatal misstep in her otherwise well controlled life and this mistake catches up on her 30 years later. In an America which is after 9/11 dominated by ultra-conservative dogmatists her life suddenly falls apart...
Kennedy really knows how to draw a character and this is true for the protagonists as well as for minor characters. "State of the Union" hooked me immediately and I read the second 300 pages (yes, it is long but I didn't want to miss a single page) in a single five hour session from 3 am to 8 am! If you are interested in contemporary American fiction, you should not miss this book.
