The stage show refers to Rush as de-evolution, which is expressed by the fact that the changing stage design runs chronologically backwards. So from the bombastic State Of The Art stage construction of the last album (Clockwork Angels) to a recreated school sports hall with the small bassamp standing on a chair, as in the early days of the band. Rush filmed their two sold-out gigs in Toronto's "Air Canada Centre" for this release, on 17/06. and 19. 06.2015

    Vielleicht liegt es am Auftrittsort Toronto, der Heimatstadt der genialen Drei. Oder daran, dass dies vielleicht die letzte große Tour der Geek Götter war.
    Denn da ist sie wieder, mehr als bei manchem Konzert der letzten Jahre: Die Spielfreude inklusive Faxen machen, grinsen; miteinander kommunizieren, rumspringen und wild improvisieren, neu interpretieren. Der Sound und die Songauswahl sind klasse. Besondere Höhepunkte sind für mich Jacob's Ladder, Hemispheres, Cygnus X-1, Xanadu, 2112 inklusive parts, die sonst nicht so oft gespielt werden/wurden.

    Auch das Bühnenkonzept ist sehr amüsant und lässt so manche Erinnerung hochkommen. Ich musste das Konzert an einem Stück durchgucken, konnte nicht mehr aufhören.

    Und dann zeigt Geddy auch noch allerlei Bass-Modelle aus seiner Sammlung, nicht nur Fender Jazz und Ricks, sondern auch Gibson und Gretsch, eine Augenweide.

    Gefällt mir insgesamt besser als z.B. Clockwork Angels live oder Snakes and Arrows live.

    Einziger Schwachpunkt (nur auf CD): die Version von The Camera Eye. Die ist auf Time Machine besser.

    Was man wissen sollte: "R40" kingt gut. Dazu später mehr.

    Was man aber eben auch auf jeden Fall wissen sollte, ist, dass Geddys Gesang inzwischen leider grenzwertig ist. Als die Tour losging, sind viele Fans in Jubelarien ausgebrochen, weil seine Stimme wieder viel besser klang - von einer Performance auf dem Niveau der Vapor-Trails- oder Snakes & Arrows-Tour war die Rede. Davon war hier in Toronto nicht mehr so viel übrig. Wenn man ehrlich ist, hätte der Mann schon zu Zeiten von Vapor Trails einen Gesangscoach gebraucht, um seine Atemtechnik in Ordnung zu bringen. Hier klingt es in den hohen Lagen immer wieder mal so, als ob er beim Singen ein- anstelle von ausatme. Ein seltsam wackeliges Jodeln ist das Ergebnis. Daher klingen die Songs am besten, bei denen er sowieso in einer tieferen Stimmlage singen muss. Bei "Subdivisions" und "Losing It" z.B. kann ich an seiner Performance wenig aussetzen. Dass er durchaus noch hoch singen kann, zeigt er wiederum mit den langen Tönen bei "Headlong Flight" - das Problem scheint eher zu sein, dass er oftmals den Ansatz nicht richtig schafft. Als Bassist (und gelegentlich auch Keyboarder) ist er dafür unschlagbar und zeigt keinerlei Verschleißerscheinungen. Neil Peart spielt seine Drums auch so kraftvoll wie immer (im zweiten Set mit noch mehr Wumms), obwohl man ihm die Anstrengung auf der Blu-Ray deutlich ansieht. Alex Lifeson hat fast durchgängig einen guten Gitarrensound und spielt auch mit viel Feuer und Leidenschaft. Ab und zu haut er allerdings auch daneben (z.B. bei "YYZ"). Egal, als Power-Trio, das Rush nun mal sind, überzeugen Rush immer noch mit genügend Power und einem sehr tighten Zusammenspiel. Beileibe keine Selbstverständlichkeit, bedenkt man das Alter der Jungs und die gesundheitlichen Probleme, mit denen sich Alex und Neil schon seit einer Weile herumschlagen müssen.

    In puncto Sound ist "R40" weitaus besser als die vorigen Veröffentlichungen und vielleicht sogar eine Art Wiedergutmachung an die Fans, die sich allenthalben über die unterirdisch schlecht bearbeitete "Clockwork Angels Tour"-DVD beschwert hatten. David Bottrill, bereits für den Remix von "Vapor Trails" verantwortlich, hat hier gute Arbeit geleistet. Anders als bei praktisch allen Rush-Livealben seit "Different Stages" stellt sich hier keine Ermüdung aufgrund von zu komprimiertem Klang ein. Und anders als bei den beiden Vorgängern ist auch der eigentliche Mix an sich gelungen, sodass man sich nicht sonderlich anstrengen muss, um die verschiedenen Instrumente heraushören zu können. Besonders der Bass sticht immer wieder hervor. Ein bisschen mehr Höhen hätten sein können, was aber nicht besonders stört; ab und an ("The Spirit of Radio"-Intro) geraten auch die Drums etwas in den Hintergrund. Es gibt allerdings einige Unterschiede zwischen Blu-Ray und CD. Die CD ist stärker komprimiert, aber durchaus noch annehmbar. Auf der Blu-Ray, speziell in 5.1, ist dafür ein amtlicher Livesound zu hören; lediglich das Schlagzeug gefällt mir nicht immer. Interessanterweise ist jedoch der Gesang auf der CD besser in den Gesamtsound eingebettet, sodass Geddys vokale Probleme weniger offensichtlich sind. Die Kameraführung und Bildqualität auf der Blu-Ray sind in Ordnung, der Schnitt ist mir persönlich immer noch ein wenig zu hektisch, aber auch visuell wirkt R40 längst nicht so amateurhaft und hirnlos zusammengebastelt wie die Clockwork Angels Tour.

    Kommen wir nun zur eigentlichen Performance. Ein chronologisch angeordnetes Medley von Momenten aus praktisch allen Rush-Alben leitet das Ganze ein, bevor die Band in der Gegenwart (d.h. bei Clockwork Angels, dem aktuellen Studioalbum) auftaucht und anfängt zu spielen. "The Anarchist" ist ein toller Opener und unterstreicht die Klasse des wohl letzten Rush-Albums. Die Nuancen, die in der dumpfen Studioproduktion und noch mehr bei der katastrophalen CA-Tour-Auswertung untergegangen sind, kann man hier klar und deutlich hören. Bei "Headlong Flight" dann Erstaunen: Gehörte das Stück auf "Clockwork Angels" noch zu meinen am wenigsten gemochten Songs, ist diese Version (wie auf der vorigen Tour mit kleinem Drumsolo in der Mitte) der Hammer! Wo ursprünglich der schnelle Rhythmus durch Mix und Mastering zu einem lärmigen Brei geworden war, kann sich der Song hier nun endlich frei entfalten. Falls es noch eines Beweises gedurft hätte, dass CA unterhalb der miesen Produktion ein überaus gutes Album ist, dann ist es R40. Man bedenke, dass mir ja sowieso schon einige Songs von CA ausnehmend gut gefallen hatten. "Headlong Flight" war bislang nicht darunter. Ich denke, dass an einem Remix des Studioalbums kein Weg vorbei führt. "Far Cry" ist als Liveklassiker natürlich eine feste Bank, "The Main Monkey Business" dagegen hat die Band seit 2007 nicht mehr gespielt und überzeugt mit seinen verschachtelten Instrumentalteilen.

    Generell gilt: Die Setlist ist wie bei so vielen Bands ein Drahtseilakt. Ich hätte mir durchaus noch mehr Raritäten gewünscht, aber man merkt an den Publikumsreaktionen deutlich, welche Songs besser ankommen und welche weniger gut. Die erste Live-Premiere der Tour, "How It Is"', stößt auf ziemlich verhaltene Reaktionen. Warum nicht "Freeze" oder "The Stars Look Down"? "Losing It" mit Ben Mink an der elektrischen Violine dagegen wird gefeiert, hatten doch viele Fans bereits auf der letzten Tour gehofft, dass Rush diese Ballade vielleicht mal spielen würden. Zudem erhält der Song eine besondere Bedeutung, da diese wohl die letzte Rush-Tour gewesen sein wird.

    Geiler Gitarrensound im Mittelteil von "Animate". Das Problem mit dem Rap in der Mitte von "Roll the Bones" hat die Band hier übrigens viel besser als auf "Different Stages Live" gelöst, wobei die ältere Liveversion allerdings insgesamt kraftvoller klingt. Bei "Subdivisions" und den Klassikern in der zweiten Hälfte ist dann natürlich sowieso großartige Stimmung. "Tom Sawyer", "YYZ" und "The Spirit of Radio" (unglaubliches Gitarrensolo!) werden hier mit einer enormen Spielfreude vorgetragen, obwohl Rush diese Songs wohl schon tausendmal spielen mussten. Noch größer ist die Freude, als nicht nur das kraftvoll interpretierte "Natural Science" seine Longtrack-Magie ausspielen kann, sondern Rush auch noch das seit 1980 nicht mehr live gespielte "Jacob's Ladder" (ein Fan-Favorit!), stimmungsvoll mit Lightshow und Animationen in Szene gesetzt, hinterherschieben. Damit spielt die Band hier über die Hälfte von "Permanent Waves". Zwar hat die Band auch ihren absoluten Höhepunkt, die beiden Teile von "Cygnus X-1", wieder ausgegraben, aber viel mehr als einst auf R30 gibt es von den beiden Stücken auch nicht. Von Hemispheres gibt es lediglich das Prelude. The Voyage ist komplett instrumental, was dem Stück ein wenig seinen Sinn nimmt, aber angesichts von Geddys Performance in Hemispheres wohl besser so ist. Es gibt eigentlich nur den Prolog (ohne gesprochene Parts) und nach dem Drumsolo noch Teil 3 (mit leicht abgewandeltem Schluss). Dafür haben Rush ihren alten Hit "Closer to the Heart" wieder ausgegraben und vor allem einen weiteren ihrer großen Longtracks wiederbelebt: "Xanadu" in voller Schönheit und im ursprünglichen Arrangement, d.h. mit den berühmten Doppelhalsgitarren! Lediglich der Schluss ist wieder etwas verändert. Mit "Xanadu", "Closer to the Heart" und Teilen von "Cygnus X-1" ist "A Farewell to Kings" damit das zweite stark vertretene Album. Von "2112" gibt es schließlich auch mehr als sonst üblich, denn neben der Overture und "The Temples of Syrinx" sowie dem Finale spielt die Band auch noch den vierten Teil "Presentation".

    Am Ende werden noch mal eben vier Songs der ersten drei Alben heruntergerockt, mit "Working Man" als logischen Schlusspunkt.

    Wie bei Rush schon seit Jahren Tradition, gibt es auch hier lustige Einlagen zur Auflockerung. Das Konzept der Tour (eine Reise durch die Bandgeschichte mit umgekehrter Chronologie) wird auch auf die Bühne übertragen - immer wieder werden Teile der Dekoration entfernt bzw. ausgetauscht (Stichwort: Waschmaschinen), in der zweiten Hälfte spielt Professor Peart auf seinem alten Drumset aus den Siebzigern und bei den Zugaben ist dann nur noch ein Verstärker auf einem Stuhl übrig, während über den Musikern eine Diskokugel blinkt. Das Ganze wird von einem Herren angekündigt, der Rush als Vorband ankündigt, deren größter Erfolg es bislang war, für Kiss eröffnet zu haben, und den Jungs rät, vielleicht noch zusätzliche Mitglieder zu suchen - womöglich ein paar Bläser! Also alles (fast) wie in den Anfangsjahren von Rush… und alles natürlich mit einem Augenzwinkern.

    Die CD enthält mehr Bonustracks als die Blu-Ray, weshalb ich mir die kombinierte Ausgabe zugelegt habe. Allerdings ist die Verpackung ein Graus. Unter den Bonustracks überzeugt speziell "One Little Victory" (wie im Remix mit Gitarrensolo), sowieso der beste Song von "Vapor Trails" und hier viel angenehmer zu hören als das Original. Ebenfalls hörenswert sind zwei weitere Songs von "Clockwork Angels": Der Titelsong und "The Wreckers" - beide vielleicht nicht klanglich einwandfrei, aber wieder viel besser hörbar als die Originale (von den CA-Tour-Versionen will ich gar nicht erst anfangen). Es gibt auch noch eine Alternativ-Version von "Losing It" mit Jonathan Dinklage (Clockwork Angels String Ensemble) an der Violine, der seinen Job mindestens genauso gut wie Ben Mink macht. Leider fehlt eine Dokumentation.

    Sollte es das gewesen sein, dann haben sich Rush mit einer eindrucksvollen Tour verabschiedet, die wenig Wünsche offenlässt und speziell die Ära der progressiven Rush mit vielen ihrer wichtigen Longtracks noch einmal zelebriert hat. Dass die Synthesizer-Alben der 80er und eher gemäßigten Rocknummern der 90er dabei eher zu kurz kommen, ist nicht so schlimm, weil diese Songs ja auch schon auf vielen vorherigen Touren gespielt wurden. Entscheidend ist, dass die Veröffentlichung sowohl in Bild und Ton überzeugt - und das war bei Rush ja nicht immer der Fall. Vier tolle Versionen von "Clockwork Angels"-Songs (zwei auf der Blu-Ray) sind dann so etwas wie das Sahnehäubchen für mich.

    Right now, the word is that Rush's 2015 tour is going to be their last big tour, and it's preserved for posterity with this release.

    If you're reading this review, you very likely know the band, so I'll address some high and low points of this release.

    High points:
    The set list is quite neat, as the band works backwards through their catalog, starting with Clockwork Angels, and working back to their debut album. A group of Moving Pictures workmen are constantly tinkering with the stage to keep the overall look of the band's setup in sync with the songs that are being played. If you like old-school instruments, plenty are on display. Alex breaks out the double-necked guitar for Xanadu, Geddy's keyboards gradually de-evolve during the show and during the second half of the show, tubular bells are added to Neil's drum kit. I was kind of hoping Geddy would break out the Steinberger bass but alas that did not happen.

    Rush always manages to drag some hidden gems "out of the vault" as Geddy likes to say, and this time is no different. How It Is, Losing It (with Ben Mink on electric violin), and Jacob's Ladder are in the setlist. Geddy actually points out how they sort of rediscovered How It Is, and how they've never performed Losing It live before. Jacob's Ladder was a live mainstay in the early 80's, and so it's nice to see it being played again.

    Geddy Lee is of course over 60 years old, and he simply can't wail like a banshee the way he did in the 1970's any more, but his voice seems to be in better shape compared to the Time Machine and Clockwork Angels tours. I was a little concerned about how well he'd pull off some of the 1970's-era songs, but it almost seems like the setlist was chosen carefully to complement his current vocal range. That means no Farewell to Kings, Freewill or Passage to Bangkok, but Geddy is able to pull off most of the early songs pretty well.

    Most of 2112 is performed (Overture, Temples of Syrinx, Presentation, and the Grand Finale).

    As another review noted, the camerawork is good. There are plenty of long cuts, and it's nice to see a concert video where it doesn't look like a caffeinated hamster is operating the cameras.

    The Toronto crowd is pretty lively. Not Rio lively, but they're not just standing around (compare to the R30 concert for example). They seem pretty excited when Geddy introduces Losing It!

    The "No Country For Old Hens" clip during the intermission is pretty funny, and I like how the band brought back the polka version of Closer to the Heart for the closing credits.

    The bad:

    When I first popped the disc in my PS3, I had to perform a system update before the system would allow me to play the disc. It drives me crazy when games and media discs beg for system updates.

    With 40 years of material to condense into three hours, some chunks of Rush's catalog are conspicuously absent. There are no songs on the setlist from Test For Echo, Presto, Hold Your Fire, and Power Windows. Now, during the Clockwork Angels Tour, they did a whole bunch of stuff from Power Windows, so maybe they were burned out on that material, but there are some fan favorites in that block of material (Resist, Driven, Mission, Force Ten, The Pass). Also, the addition of Lakeside Park to the setlist was kind of a head-scratcher, as I didn't think anyone in the band liked that song! I would think that Bastille Day would have been a better representative from Caress of Steel or I Think I'm Going Bald for that matter.

    While Geddy Lee's voice is in better form compared to the last couple of live releases, there are a couple of places where he seems to struggle a little bit. During Lakeside Park, it's almost as if he's doing falsetto at times. On the other hand, he pulls off What You're Doing really well.

    Overall, this is a pretty good performance. It doesn't have the raw energy of Rush in Rio or the smooth polish of Exit Stage Left, but it certainly compares favorably to the Clockwork Angels and Time Machine shows. Since this might be the last concert DVD of the greatest three-man Canadian band in history, I'd say that it's a must own performance for Rush fans.
