Was für ein Spaß! Avenged Sevenfold sind die neuen The Darkness, augenzwinkernde Poser mit hervorragendem spieltechnischem Background und fast schon kindlicher Freude am Einreißen von Genregrenzen.

Die Band aus Los Angeles kommt eigentlich aus der Hardcore-Ecke, löst sich aber auf ihrem dritten, mit einem fetten Grinsen City Of Evil betitelten Album fast völlig von ihren Wurzeln und überrascht mit einer der frischesten Crossover-Mischungen der letzten Jahre. Freakiger, supertighter Verrückten-Metal à la System Of A Down trifft auf doppelläufige Iron-Maiden-Leadgitarren, überbordenden Bombast-Kitsch von Manowar-Format, grandiose Akustikgitarrensoli, zum Brüllen komische Klischeetexte und Kindergarten-Refrains, wie sie sich nicht einmal Hammerfall- und Helloween-Klons zu singen trauen. Zusammengehalten wird die ganze Geschichte von einer absolut sattelfesten Rhythmusabteilung, die jeden abrupten Schlenker problemlos mitmacht und in dem lustig-chaotischen Wirrwarr sogar noch die Zeit und Muße findet, um richtig schön fett draufloszubraten.     Wie schon der Titel dieser Rezension vermuten lässt, ist "City of Evil" von Avenged Sevenfold bzw. A7X (meine Lieblingsband) für mich schlicht und einfach das beste Album, aller Zeiten überhaupt. Realistisch gesehen kann kein Album näher an PERFEKT dran sein, wie dieses.
    Der Soud ist genial und abwchselungsreich; der Gesang reicht von hoch zu tief und Rau und beinhaltet auch Chorelemente; die Textpassagen sind oft lang, meist tiefgründig und kaum flach; die Refrains sind oft simpel gehalten und deshalb umso genialer (dazu kommen variable Songstrukturen! Dazu kommt noch die wunderbare Länge der einzelnen Lieder, von denen keines bedeutend kürzer, als 5 Minuten ist, was sich in einer Gesamtlaufzeit von 1 Std. 13 Minten niederschlägt.
    Das Gesamte Album ist dicht gepackt (auch in den Übergangspassagen) und beinhaltet praktisch keinen schwachen Song, ist durch und durch mit phantastischen Gitarrenriffs, aggressiven und gefühlvollen Gesangstellen, sowie schnellem und eindrucksvollem Schlagzeug überzogen.
    Im Gesamten spiegelt sich im teils epischem Sound, Rhytmus und Text, genau und auf wunervolle Weise der Titel "City of Evil, sowie das schaurig dunkle Cover wieder und rundet so das ganze Werk zu einem metallisch musikalischem Goldstück ab!!! KAUFEN KAUFEN KAUFEN & weitersagen!

    どうせ今はやりのニュースクール〜メタルコアだろうとタカをくくってましたが、いや〜ふっとびました。
    オフィシャルサイトで#4のPVをみて一発でKOされ速攻2ndと本作を購入しました・・かなりキテます！
    にわか仕込みのパンク崩れバンドにはとうてい真似できないような、展開の多い曲構成に泣きまくりのギターと、真っ正面からメロスピ〜王道HM/HRやってます。
    かなりマニアックなことをやっているのに、いかにもアメリカンHRらしいカラっとした音づくりと印象的なギターリフ、フックありまくりのメロディラインや絶妙なアレンジセンスゆえ、決してクドくもクサくもならず、長い曲も一気に聞けてしまいます（捨て曲が一曲もない！）。
    アコギやオーケストラによる荘厳なSEも否が応でも曲を盛り上げてくれます。
    Voの独特の雰囲気からはなぜか往年のG'N'Rをも思い出してしまいました（似てないんだけどね）。
    ご批判を承知であえて乱暴に例えさせてもらうなら、G'N'R meets Helloween（もしくはIron Maiden? ＋Metallicaも^^)と言ったところでしょうか？
    とにかくHM/HRファンであればツボにはまりまくること請け合いです。こんな良質なアルバムにもかかわらず現時点で国内盤未発売・・日本のレコード業界ってホントにメタル愛がないんだなぁ・・

    Terzo album in studio per la band americana, e dopo due bei dischi il primo capolavoro! In questo album, melodia e potenza viaggiano a braccetto grazie alla potenza di The Rev dietro alle pelli, con i chitarristi che macinano riff bellissimi il tutto condito dalla voce di Mr. Shadows, che ormai ha completamente abbandonato il cantato "Growls" (soprattutto a causa di un'infezione alle corde vocali che gli ha quasi compromesso la carriera), per un cantato sempre potente ma anche molto melodico, quasi ad imitare James Hetfield dei Metallica. Infatti il gruppo di S. Francisco è una delle fonti di maggiore ispirazione per gli Avenged Sevenfold, insieme ai grandi maestri del genere come Iron Maiden e Guns N'Roses! In questo album troviamo delle vere e proprie perle come Burn it Down, Bat Country e tante altre! Un gran bel disco!

    I will never forget when this album hit. After the mid nineties, and even the great Pantera had fallen in popularity, there were a lot of pushes to get metal going again. There was a good serge of Nu Metal, which I was never a fan of, that lead into the metalcore seen of the early 2000's. While I do love some of those acts, most never really caught on with mainstream audiences. A7X was one of those bands. At that time, I hadn't really seen the genius of Waking the Fallen, and it seemed like an screamo band that was more interested in their female fans that actually making a metal album (It has taken time to appreciate the complex Maiden with punk influence structure of that album) but this one really broke open metal to the masses. This is the best A7X album, and while they have only gotten bigger since this album's release, this is the one that they will be remembered for until and if they can top it.

    There are a lot of criticisms that this album is too much of a departure from their previous albums, which may be somewhat true, but I will say that it is for good reasons. I have heard a lot of emo and AFI comparisons for this album and how the band isn't metal, and while I might agree with their subsequent self titled album being more rock, the guitar parts on here alone qualify this as a very technical metal album, just one that the uninitiated can listen to and appreciate. I understand that to the purists that this almost seems like sacrament, but that type of thinking alienates the rest of society. I know that it is a hard thing to do, to look inward at the community that we love and to realize that while integrity and all the great things that metal stands for, being completely alone isn't one of them. There was a time when this whole country loved metal and had integrity. Making music that only a few people understand isn't helping anyone. Trying to say that one thing qualifies as metal because of how hard core it is reduces music to numbers and not how it makes you feel, and A7X managed to make a metal album that was fun. This is what brought guitar parts back into metal beyond just double base drums and base guitar. I have heard the criticism that Shadow's voice sounds a little whiney here, but not any more so than old GNR. This is the album that most kids today see as metal, and I don't think that is a bad thing. For an old timer that has been listening to the genre for his whole life, it is really cool to have things chaged up from time to time.
