Alle drei Dreadlock-Propheten der "heiligen Dreieinigkeit" des Reggae - Bob Marley, Bunny Livingston und Peter Tosh - sangen für "Gleichberechtigung und Gerechtigkeit". Tosh war dabei der militanteste der drei - nicht bereit Gefangene zu machen. Seine Stimme hatte dabei etwas bedrohliches und machte so die Anliegen der Rastafari zu dringlichen Forderungen. Die überarbeitet vorliegenden Aufnahmen waren 1976 die ersten, die Tosh für ein amerikanisches Major Label machte; es war außerdem das erste Mal, daß er mit Sly Dunbar und Robbie Shakespeare zusammenarbeitete (die später die legendären "Riddim Twins" wurden). Die Stücke wurden sofort zu Hymnen - nicht nur im Reggae, sondern im internationalen Poplexikon. Wenn man heute Roots-Reggae hört, dann mag einem manches klischeehaft erscheinen (Love & Peace), ja, sogar naiv vorkommen. Nicht Tosh. Vor dem Hintergrund des heutigen sozialen Klimas läuft es einem bei Legalize It immer noch kalt den Rücken runter - denn dieses Reggaekämpfer will sich einfach nicht beugen. --Elena Oumano

    Peter Tosh hat die Legalisierung des als Ganja bekannten Krauts in seiner Heimat Jamaika nicht mehr erlebt. Aber was er dazu gesagt hätte, kann man auf dieser LP hören. Diese Musik wurde für Schallplatten gemacht, nicht für CDs. Auch das für die damalige Zeit provozierende Cover kommt bei der LP natürlich viel besser zur Geltung. Wer das Cover immer noch provozierend findet, der sollte vielleicht auch von der LP lassen. Der Titelsong wurde bei der Veröffentlichung von den meisten deutschen Radiostationen gemieden, bzw. überhaupt nicht gespielt. Irgendwie ist das auch so geblieben. Doch auch heute noch ist das großartiger Reggae.

    Peter Tosch ist eine Legende in Jamaika und der Welt. Seine Musik ist unsterblich.
    Dieses Album hat natürlich mit dem Drogenkonsum der Rastafaris zu tun, was jeder weiß.
    Den Joint zu kriminalisieren ist für die Jamaikaner eine Art Unrecht.
    Diese Themen werden auf dieser CD eindrucksvoll von Peter Tosch musikalisch aufgearbeitet. In Jamiaka hört man den Song sehr oft, obwohl "uralt". Hier in Deutschland aber leider kaum.

    "Legalize it" ist eine großartiges Album, und ein wichtiges Stück der Reggaegeschichte. Peter Tosh schuf diese Album nach seinem Ausstieg bei den Wailers, aber er hat keine seine Fähigkeiten als atemberaubender Musiker zurückgelassen. Dieses Album ist keinenfalls nur für Drogenkonsumierende, sondern für alle Fans der Reggaemusik, aber auch der normale Mensch, der alles Mögliche hört, findet hier dran Gefallen!

    Peter Tosh der zusammen mit Bunny Livingston und Bob Marley die Wailers gründete, brachte nach deren Bruch mit "Legalize it" sein erstes Solo Album heraus, welches häufig auch als Fehltritt bezeichnet wurde.

    Ein Muss für Reggae Fans und Sammler.

    Richtig interessant ist, wie ich finde, nur der Titelsong, der sich natürlich um die Legalisierung von Marihuana dreht und in dem musikhistorischen Kontext betrachtet werden muss.

    Dem vielseitigen Musikliebhaber, der seinen Horizont erweitern will, aber kaum durch das Dickicht der Vielzahl von Veröffentlichungen hindurch findet, empfehle ich von Linton Kwesi Johnson "Forces of Victory" und "Bass Culture".

    Ist natürlich auch immer Geschmackssache.
