    "Der Leviathan" ist ein 1651 erschienenes Werk des englischen Philosophen und Staatstheoretikers Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679).

    Vor dem Hintergrund des von Unruhen und Religionskriegen geprägten Zeitalters begründet Hobbes die Notwendigkeit eines starken Zentralstaats, der über das Gewaltmonopol verfügt.

    Inspiriert wurde Hobbes unter anderem von Thomas Morus (1478-1535), worauf er ganz am Schluss seines Werkes ausdrücklich verweist. Hobbes' "Leviathan" erscheint aber in wichtigen Punkten wie ein Gegenbild zu Morus' Hauptwerk "Utopia", in dem ein Idealstaat beschrieben wird.

    Man kann das schon machen, den Text für eilige Leser zu kürzen.
    Dann soll das aber in der Beschreibung ersichtlich sein.
    Demjenigen, der sich genauer mit Leviathan befassen will und neben der sprachlich etwas unhandlichen Originalfassung etwas komfortabel, gleichwohl sinnerhaltend Lesbares sucht, kann man nur raten: Finger weg von dieser Ausgabe!
