Hugh Hefner's Playboy: 1926-1979 Hardcover – Illustrated, 1 Oct. 2013

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

The life and times of Hugh M. Hefner: An illustrated autobiography with highlights from Playboy’s first 25 years “A Renaissance man in the fullest sense of the word… It is the best history book the 21st century has so far produced.”
The Independent, London

Released on the 60th anniversary of the magazine, this sumptuous six-volume anthology celebrates the decadence, sophistication, and wit of the original men’s magazine and its creator. His personal life and career—from cartoon-drawing childhood to astonishing success with Playboy—are revealed in the most intimate portrait ever. Hugh Hefner’s Playboy highlights the extraordinary years from 1953 to 1979, with a selection of each era’s spiciest centerfolds, but also pieces on art, design, architecture, and writing by literary icons Gore Vidal, Norman Mailer, Ian Fleming, and Ray Bradbury, as well as some Playboy interviews. The liberalism and civil rights debates in the magazine were nothing short of trailblazing—at a time when the notion of a black President was almost laughable.

A wealth of never-before-seen ephemera from Hefner’s personal archives includes original artwork, cartoons and correspondence, and a long autobiographical text about his youth, military service, early career as a cartoonist, numerous girlfriends, and eventual success with
Playboy. A vast selection of personal photos—many previously unseen—include behind-the-scenes shots from the Playboy Mansion, Playboy Clubs, and the Big Bunny jet. This is the definitive history of Playboy and its legendary founder. First published in TASCHEN’s limited edition series—now available in this unlimited popular edition!

Review

“The ultimate gift for the globetrotting playboy.” ― The Gentleman’s Journal

“Presented for the first time as a deluxe reissue, is one of the year’s warmest, most provocative and entertaining publications, is the six-volume Hugh Hefner’s Playboy. The word ‘megabook’ could be used here, particularly as a means to describe the highly intricate work done by TASCHEN, the publisher. A delicious pop autobiography, beautiful and rich.” ―
Luimagazine.fr

“Coffee table giants TASCHEN have excelled themselves with a six-volume chronicle of the man who took bunnies out of the kitchen and into the bedroom… Definitely one for the bachelors among you.” ―
Men's Health

Top review from Germany

5.0 out of 5 stars VICTOIRE DE LA BEAUTE
Reviewed in France on 5 January 2018

4.0 out of 5 stars Like it, but don't love it
Reviewed in the United States on 2 March 2016
Like it, but don't love it. First of all, these books are in a slipcase inside a large Playboy box to carry them in. Neat packaging, but my outside box had a big rip in it. Bummer. The five volumes start at Hugh's beginning and end long before the present. I believe it was in the 70's. Each book has text and pictures from the years it covers and that takes up about 3/4 of the book. The rest is additional stories, interviews, jokes and pictures from the same years. Really, these books are more like a big scrapbook of Hugh Hefner's fondest memories. They're not a comprehensive history of the magazine, but they are interesting. Worth a look, especially now that that format has been destroyed.
