Das sozialistische Bildungs- und Erziehungskonzept der DDR scheiterte nicht erst nach der gesellschaftlichen Wende im Herbst 1989. Überwiegend junge Leute, die ihre praktischen Lebenserfahrungen aus­ schließlich oder fast ausschließlich im Alltag des Sozialismus "in den Farben der DDR" gesammelt hatten, die von klein auf in das sozialistische Bildungs­ und Erziehungssystem integriert worden waren, verließen im Spätsommer und Herbst 1989 zu Tausenden unter Gefährdung des eigenen Lebens, unter Zurücklassung aller persönlichen Güter und unter Inkaufnahme einer wahr­ scheinlich langjährigen Trennung von ihren Familien die DDR. Wovor flüchteten diese Menschen? Was suchten sie? Sie litten keine materielle Not. Sie brauchten sich nicht um emen Ausbildungs- bzw. Arbeitsplatz zu sorgen. Oft hatten sie sich sogar einen "klei­ nen Wohlstand" geschaffen. Die Ursachen der Massenflucht waren sicherlich individuell vielschichtig. Als eine Ursache aber kann die weltanschaulich-ideologische Indoktrination mit ihrer perfektionierten, der Wirklichkeit auf Schritt und Tritt widerspre­ chenden Schwarz-WeiB-Propaganda vermutet werden, die u.a. auch als politisch-ideologisches Prinzip das gesamte Bildungswesen in allen seinen Ebe­ nen durchzog. Die Gesellschaft der DDR war eine umfassend totalitäre Gesellschaft. De­ mokratie, Selbstbestimmung und Selbstverantwortung waren zwar gängige Vokabeln, aber ihr Inhalt war ideologisch versäult festgeschrieben. Der Spiel­ raum innerhalb dieser Festschreibungen ("historischen Wahrheiten" bzw. "hi­ storischen Gesetzmäßigkeiten") war eng begrenzt und unterlag einer perma­ nenten Kontrolle.
