Die „Volksgemeinschaft“ gehörte zu den zentralen Propagandaformeln des NS-Regimes und war unzweifelhaft ein Leitbegriff des Nationalsozialismus. Er verhieß soziale Gemeinschaft, politische Einheit sowie den Abbau von Klassen- und Standesschranken und förderte auf diese Weise die Popularität der NS-Herrschaft. Er setzte nach 1933 soziale Schubkräfte frei, mobilisierte die Bevölkerung und trug zum wachsenden Konsens mit dem NS-Regime bei.

Was aber verstanden die Nationalsozialisten unter „Volksgemeinschaft“, und welche Rolle spielte dieser Begriff in der gesellschaftlichen Praxis des Regimes? Oft wird er mit sozialer Gleichheit in Verbindung gebracht und damit gründlich missverstanden, weil nämlich Ungleichheiten für die nationalsozialistische Volksgemeinschaft konstitutiv waren. Auch taugt er nicht als statische Kategorie der Gesellschaftsanalyse, weil die politische Kraft der „Volksgemeinschaft“ in der Verheißung und Mobilisierung, aber nicht der Feststellung eines sozialen Ist-Zustandes lag.

Deshalb verfolgen die die zehn Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes die Wirkungsmächtigkeit der „Volksgemeinschaft“ in der sozialen Praxis. Sie gehen der Frage nach, worin sich die NS-Volksgemeinschaft in Konzeption und Praxis von anderen Vorstellungen politischer Gemeinschaftlichkeit unterschied und wie sie im Alltag des Regimes hergestellt wurde: bei der Ausgrenzung „Fremdvölkischer“, bei der Mobilisierung von Millionen Männern und Frauen im NS-Organisationskosmos oder der Rüstungswirtschaft, bei der Regelung selbst kleinster Detailfragen wie dem Zugang zu Bunkerplätzen im Bombenkrieg.

Ein Teil der Beiträge wurde 2008 in der Sektion „Ungleichheiten in der nationalsozialistischen Volksgemeinschaft“ auf dem Historikertag in Dresden zur Diskussion gestellt.

About the Author

Dr. Frank Bajohr,geboren 1961, ist Wissenschaftlicher Leiter des Zentrums für Holocaust-Studien am Institut für Zeitgeschichte und Professor an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München. Er war bis 2013 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter der Forschungsstelle für Zeitgeschichte in Hamburg und arbeitete als Fellow u. a. in Yad Vashem/Israel und am US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.
Bei Fischer erschien von ihm u. a.: ›Parvenüs und Profiteure. Korruption in der NS-Zeit‹ (2001) und ›»Unser Hotel ist judenfrei«. Bäder-Antisemitismus im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert‹ (2003).



Dr. Michael Wildt, geb. 1954, Historiker. 1991-1997 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Forschungsstelle für die Geschichte des Nationalsozialismus in Hamburg, 1997-2009 am Hamburger Institut für Sozialforschung. Seit 2009 Professor für Deutsche Geschichte im 20. Jahrhundert mit Schwerpunkt im Nationalsozialismus an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Zuletzt veröffentlichte er »Volksgemeinschaft als Selbstermächtigung« (2007) und »Generation des Unbedingten. Das Führungskorps des Reichssicherheitshauptamtes« (2002).
