Die auf sechs Bände angelegten Speziellen Grundlagen der Soziologie von Hartmut Esser sind die Weiterführung und Vertiefung seines Einführungswerkes Soziologie. Allgemeine Grundlagen. In umfassender Weise werden die zentralen Gegenstandsbereiche und theoretischen Herangehensweisen der Soziologie dargestellt.

Für diesen ersten Band der Speziellen Grundlagen »Situationslogik und Handeln« erhielt der Autor den René-König-Lehrbuchpreis 2000 der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie.

Hartmut Esser präsentiert in seinen Speziellen Grundlagen einen Ansatz, der die wichtigsten theoretischen Konzepte der Soziologie, Sozialpsychologie und Ökonomie zu einem allgemeinen sozialwissenschaftlichen Erklärungsprogramm integriert. Der Aufbau des Werkes folgt dem Modell der soziologischen Erklärung mit den drei charakteristischen »Logiken«: Die Logik der Situation, die Logik der Selektion und die Logik der Aggregation.

In Band 1 werden das Konzept der Situationslogik und das der Situationsanalyse behandelt. Dabei geht es insbesondere um die speziellen Einzelheiten für die ersten beiden Logiken des Modells der soziologischen Erklärung in ihrer elementaren Form: die Logik bzw. die Definition der Siuation und die Selektion des Handelns.

Themen des Bandes sind u.a.: Die Objektivität der Situation, das Thomas-Theorem, Handeln, Wert-Erwartungstheorie, die Logik der subjektiven Vernunft, Lernen, die »Logik« der Situation, soziale Klassen.

In diesem ersten Band geht es letztendlich um die allgemeine Erklärung des Handelns der Menschen und damit um den für die soziologische Erklärung nötigen universalen nomologischen Kern. Auch wird behandelt, nach welchen Gesetzen Menschen aus Erfahrungen lernen und ihre Erwartungen und Bewertungen ändern. Dieses Lernen wird selbst als eine Art von – mehr oder weniger – intelligentem Handeln verstanden.

Hartmut Esser ist Professor für Soziologie und Wissenschaftslehre an der Universität Mannheim. Er ist Autor und Herausgeber zahlreicher Veröffentlichungen. Sein inzwischen in der 3. Auflage erschienenes Lehrbuch Soziologie. Allgemeine Grundlagen erschien zuerst 1993 bei Campus.
