    Es gehört zu den genetisch und sozial verankerten Grundbedürfnissen des Menschen, sich vor Risiken zu schützen. In der modernen Welt drohen uns nicht nur Naturkatastrophen, sondern auch eine Vielzahl von selbst gemachten Gefahren: Atomenergie, chemische Industrie, Hormone, Medikamente usw. können uns das Leben erleichtern und Schmerzen lindern, besitzen aber auch das Potenzial, großes Unheil anzurichten. Doch wie funktioniert die Wahrnehmung von Risiken in der Öffentlichkeit? Risikoforscher und Psychologe Paul Slovic hat in seinem Buch 26 Fachbeiträge zum Thema Risikowahrnehmung versammelt: Die Autoren spüren dabei vor allem dem Unterschied in der Wahrnehmung von Risiken bei Experten und wissenschaftlichen Laien nach. Die einzelnen Artikel verstehen sich als Zusammenfassungen einschlägiger (meist amerikanischer) Studien zum Thema.
