Rain Fall is a good book. The whole Rain series is a good series. This is the first with John Rain, Fujiwara Junichi.. if you like Japan you will love the settings of this book especially! It's worth reading if only to travel to all the intimate spots Rain visits. Rain (as a contract killer) works alone, apart from a computer nerd, Fukasawa Haruyoshi, Harry, whom he hires because of his hacking skills and who suspects and knows far more than Rain is aware of. Rain also starts a relationship (or better: a serious crush that feels like true love to him) with a "civilian" in his language, Kawamura Midori,a woman not at home in the world of organised and paid murder. This is one of the strong points, Rain has to hide what he is, as he always has to hide that, but simultaneosly he bares a lot of himself (NO pun intended) to Harry and Midori and wants and aches for someone to confide in. Won't tell you anything about how that turns out, but this book starts off a lot of developments, that will in the other books become important. It's in itself complete, it's gripping and well written. You don't have to be a cynic to love the Rain novels, his demons are depicted well and while un-japanese, he acknowledges them to derive from his catholic mother... that is funny in itself, in an unfunny way. The whole series is twisted, but in an intelligent way. You will read on, if you like this one!

This was fine, but not great. Two things annoyed me. The first is that it was told in first-person narration. For a protagonist who values secrecy and staying under the radar, I couldn't stop wondering who he was telling his story to and why. The second aspect that became tedious was the constant description of counter-surveillance measures he took while following someone or trying to avoid being followed. This comprised most of the first half of the book.

Having said that, it was entertaining and I enjoyed the Tokyo setting. Barry Eisler clearly knows a lot about the city and the concrete details he includes bring it to life.

In sum, if you keep your expectations in check, then you'll be satisfied.

If you like Jack Reacher, you will also fall for John Rain. Great thriller with nice surprises and a good deadcount. You will enjoy reading this on planes or trains and will not want to arrive at your destination before you have finished reading. A real page turner.

The first mission for Tokio Killer John Rain is to kill a politician and make it look "natural". By completing this job he gets involved in a conflict between different groups. With his growing knowledge of the circumstances and his crush on a woman there are moral difficulties he needs to master.
The author emphasises the technics and strategies Rain uses to stay alive in his dangerous environnement. He also explains technics from martial arts like Judo. Furthermore Tokyo is described very well and vibrantly which makes the story even more fascinating. Facts about japaneese politics are given and fluently go over into fiction.
All in all the book is good to read and gives some hours of good entertainment.

Barry Eisler writes about things he knows about. He has had an interesting life and so this first novel is very exciting. The descriptions of Tokyo were very evocative. The action fast paced and the politics very believable. It is a hard ask to like a hero who kills for money.

The Rain-series by Barry Eisler is the most believable, thrilling and tremendously entertaining work that I came across so far.
After having read all of Barry's thrillers at least twice, I can't wait for the next one.

Almost. The plot is somewhat less twisted than that of "The Ninja" or "The Miko", but it is well spun and should easily satify even very demanding readers. Eisler paints a vivid picture of contemporary Japanese politics, culture and sub-culture. Unsurprisingly, it bears strong resemblance to Lustbader's novels (not because he copied it, presumably, but because he identified similar traits). All in all Eisler continues the Ninja's "tradition", although I found his writing more succinct and fast paced than Lustbader's (perhaps at the expense of a more elaborate and more discriptive style). A definitive recommendation, which also applies to the sequel "Hard Rain".

This book could have gotten a better review if you had left the original title as it was. This was a waste of time!

Why for heavens sake publish an old book with a new title, except trying to rip off some people who already have purchased and read "Rain Fall". Shame on the prick who wanted to cheat me, but fortunately I became aware of this ploy...

Had to set a star, not for the book - that would have gotten 5 stars.
