Good for occasional use and backups. Annoying power saving feature seriously affecting performance.

This hard drive is good for occasional use only, but not so much if you intend to access the files frequently. It has built-in power management feature which makes it to spin down if not accessed for a few seconds. So if you frequently open or copy your documents stored on the drive, each time you need to wait for a couple of seconds for the disk to spin up. That's very annoying and I don't understand why Transcend wouldn't provide any software to change this setting.
I'd like to stress out that it has nothing to do with Power Options in Windows which, as Transcend support site claims, allow you to keep the drive always on. This is called Advanced Power Management and Windows can't control it because it's a built-in within a firmware of the particular hard drive the Transcend installed inside the enclosure (in my case its WD10JPVX). Some of the "green" drives have it enabled by default to save the energy which seriously decreases performance and may be extremely annoying for the user. To find out more search the web for Advanced Power Management or APM.
Because I managed to find a permanent solution for this issue and disable the APM, I'm giving this product 3 stars. Otherwise it'd be 2.
(If you want to know the fix, search the web for "apmtimer", a Linux-based tool developed for WD drives).
